Most of us may not know what to say or how to respond when someone tells us they are thinking about su***de. We may freeze, worry about saying the wrong thing or try to reassure them too quickly.

Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) teaches practical skills to help you ask directly, listen without judgement and work with someone towards safety.

In many two-parent households, one person often becomes the โ€œdefault parentโ€: the one who carries most of the invisible load. Even when their partner helps, they may still be carrying the heavier load.

That invisible work is exhausting. It means being responsible not only for the child, but for making sure the whole family keeps functioning.

Every familyโ€™s circumstances are different, and sharing the load will not look equal every day. This is not about keeping score or shaming parents. It is about making the work visible, communicating honestly with each other on caregiving responsibilities, and making sure this responsibility will not quietly default to the same person.

With the increased childcare leave mentioned during the National Day Rally, this can give parents precious time with their children. But time off only helps if it's not just one parent carrying the mental load alone.
Because โ€œhelpingโ€ is not the same as sharing responsibility.

๐Ÿ˜Œ In a calm moment, we may think: โ€œI know what I would do.โ€
๐Ÿ˜จ But when faced with a real threat โ€” screaming, injuries, or a weapon โ€” our brain and body can respond very differently.

As Dr Annabelle Chow shared, even she experienced this herself when her young son fell into a pool. She always thought she would immediately act, but in that moment, she froze.
โ˜๏ธ This is more common than many people realise.

Just like CPR, training and practice can give us a mental and physical script to fall back on during emergencies. It does not guarantee a perfect response, but it can improve our readiness.

Courage is not always about rushing towards danger. Sometimes, it is:

- recognising an emergency
- keeping yourself and others safe
- calling for help
- knowing what action is appropriate in that moment

Understanding how we respond in crises can help us support ourselves and others when it matters most. ๐Ÿ’›

It is not always because they do not care. Sometimes, they have learnt that speaking up does not change anything, that saying โ€œnoโ€ comes with consequences, or that disagreeing feels unsafe.
This is where psychological safety matters.

A psychologically safe workplace does not mean everyone always agrees. It means people feel safe to share ideas, raise concerns, ask questions, and have different opinions without fear of being dismissed or punished.
Because when people feel heard, teams gain more than voices; they gain better ideas, earlier problem-solving, and the courage to improve.

Silence is not always agreement. Sometimes, it is self-protection.

โ€œ๐™„โ€™๐™ข ๐™›๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š.โ€
Sometimes, it is not an answer. It is a survival habit.
Some people do not struggle because they have no one to turn to. They struggle because needing someone has never felt safe.

Hyper-independence is not always about being strong or capable. Sometimes, it develops after learning that asking for help feels like a burden, that your needs are โ€œtoo muchโ€, or that relying on others leads to disappointment.
And you become the person who goes:
โ€œIโ€™ve got it.โ€
โ€œDonโ€™t worry about me.โ€
โ€œI can handle it myself.โ€

But beneath independence, there may still be a part that longs to be supported, understood, and cared for.
Needing help does not make you weak. Connection is not a burden. It is a human need. ๐Ÿ’›

Why does being overlooked by a stranger sometimes stay with us for days, while other inconveniences are forgotten by dinner?

Sometimes, it is not because we are โ€œtoo sensitiveโ€. It is because belonging matters to our brains.

For much of human history, being accepted by a group was linked to safety and survival. So today, moments like being dismissed, interrupted, excluded, or overlooked can feel more painful than we expect.

These moments are not just about what happened. They can quietly trigger a deeper question:
โ€œDo I matter here?โ€
โ€œDo I belong?โ€

That is why feeling seen, heard, and understood can have such a powerful impact. A simple act of listening, remembering, or showing care can help someone feel safe and connected.

Belonging is not just being around people. It is knowing you matter. ๐Ÿ’›

Has Singaporeโ€™s mental health narrative changed for the better?
In many ways, yes.

We are talking about mental health more openly than before. More people recognise words like anxiety, burnout, depression, trauma and therapy. Mental health is also becoming part of conversations in schools, workplaces and communities.

But awareness is not the same as acceptance.

- We may say, โ€œItโ€™s okay to seek help,โ€ but still feel uncomfortable when someone actually says, โ€œIโ€™m not coping.โ€
- We may talk about burnout but still reward overworking.
- We may say, โ€œMental health matters,โ€ but still expect people to keep performing.

A healthier mental health narrative is not just about knowing the right words. It is about creating homes, workplaces and communities where people can be honest, supported and not shamed for needing help.

Progress is not only about speaking more openly. It is also about responding more compassionately.

She played the indestructible girl. But no real person should be expected to be.

For many, Hayden Panettiere will be remembered as Claire Bennet in Heroes, the cheerleader who could survive every injury and heal. Away from the screen, however, Hayden carried struggles that were far more human and not always visible.

In her memoir, ๐™๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™„๐™จ ๐™ˆ๐™š: ๐˜ผ ๐™๐™š๐™˜๐™ ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, she spoke openly about postnatal depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and grief. Her honesty showed us that strength does not mean pain doesn't hurt.

Unlike her character we see on screen, people do not heal instantly. Recovery can take time. It can involve setbacks, uncertainty and asking for help more than once.

Someone can be talented, successful and deeply loved while still struggling. Someone can appear strong while quietly needing support.

As we remember Hayden, may we honour not only the difficult chapters she shared, but also her talent, courage and willingness to reclaim her own story.

No one is indestructible. Check in on the people you care about, listen without judgement and remind them that they do not have to carry everything alone.
