What if reflection wasn’t something we saved for special occasions, but something we returned to, again and again?

A Regular Invitation is exactly that: an open invitation to pause, notice, and reconnect with the stories that shape our work and our lives. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, student, educator, caregiver, or simply someone who enjoys thoughtful writing, this is a space to reflect, write, and be part of a growing community that believes stories matter.

We’re also delighted to share the first contribution to In Common, our monthly writing invitation. The first word we offered was Thresholds, and we are deeply grateful to Alex for responding so thoughtfully and generously with this beautiful piece.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t even need to call yourself a writer. All you need is a willingness to pay attention—to the moments, conversations, and experiences that make us more human.

Thank You for Joining Us!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who chose to spend your Saturday afternoon with us at our symposium exploring the complex ethical landscape of maternal-fetal medicine.

Together with specialists from KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and the SingHealth Duke-NUS Medical Humanities Institute, participants explored two thought-provoking case studies and engaged in rich multidisciplinary discussions. Through the four pillars of biomedical ethics—autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice—we reflected on the ethical complexities of maternal-fetal medicine and the importance of thoughtful, patient-centred decision-making.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our moderator/panelists Sim Wen Shan 沈彣珊 Lay-Kok Tan Aileen Wei Ching Tan Devanand Anantham Peter Chiu Leung CHOW Teck Chuan Voo for sharing their expertise and insights, and to every participant for your thoughtful questions, active engagement, and meaningful contributions. Your willingness to learn and exchange perspectives made the discussions truly enriching.

❤️ Today's HEART Feature: The Hands that Taught Me

Sometimes, the people we think we are helping are the very ones who end up teaching us the most.

In The Hands that Taught Me, Madhu shares a moving reflection on her experience volunteering with Zoe, a young girl living with a rare skin disorder and double amputations. What begins as an encounter marked by discomfort and uncertainty becomes a profound lesson in resilience, courage, and the quiet strength of simply living joyfully despite life's challenges.

Madhu is a final-year medical student at Duke-NUS Medical School with a passion for the medical humanities. Trained in Anthropology, she uses writing to make sense of her encounters in medicine and to cultivate the empathy and thoughtfulness she hopes to bring to her future practice.
Her essay is a reminder that learning in healthcare often happens beyond the classroom—and that some of our greatest teachers come in the most unexpected forms.

🌟 Turning Fear into Courage: A CHEER™️ Story from KKH 🌟

"She’s scared of the machine. The last time she had an x-ray, she cried the whole night."

When Lily came to the CT scan room, she was terrified. But our amazing radiographer knew exactly what to do. With a little help from "Buzzy the bravery bear" and a lot of patience, Elizabeth turned a scary moment into a space adventure! 🚀🐻

By the end, Lily hugged her bear and whispered, "That wasn't scary at all."

This beautiful moment of Empathy and Compassion was captured by Lim Peng Hoon, Senior Principal Radiographer at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. It reminds us that our profession isn’t just about positioning patients correctly—it’s about meeting them where they are, especially when they’re small and scared.
