The Brain at Work:
Protecting Focus, Memory and Mental Energy in a Hyper-Digital Workspace

This past Wednesday, I had the privilege of speaking on this topic as part of Cornerstone Group’s Wellness Wednesday programme.

I’m particularly heartened to see a company that places such a strong emphasis on the wellbeing of its people — investing in meaningful conversations about health and inviting speakers from around the world to share knowledge with their global teams.

This was also my 5th Wellness Wednesday webinar with Cornerstone since 2025, which makes the invitation especially meaningful.

It’s always an honour to be invited back and to have the opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of their people.

As our workplaces become increasingly digital, conversations around focus, mental energy, screen habits, posture and brain health are becoming more important than ever.

I’m grateful to be able to bring these conversations into the workplace in a practical and engaging way.

Workplace wellbeing isn’t just about reducing stress. It’s about helping people perform at their best, sustainably.

And if your organisation is looking to bring meaningful, practical health and wellbeing conversations to your employees, I’d be happy to explore how I can contribute.

Thank you, Cornerstone Group, for the continued trust. As the Group HR Director Jane said: “See you again next year!”

Why does my neck hurt even though I haven't injured it?

One of the most common things I hear from patients is:
"I didn't do anything to my neck. Why does it suddenly hurt?"*

It's a good question.

We often associate pain with an obvious injury.

You fall.

You lift something heavy.

You turn suddenly.

You get into an accident.

But not all pain starts with a single event.

Sometimes, it's the accumulation of small things.

Hours at a desk.

Looking down at a phone.

Long meetings.

Driving.

Poor sleep.

Stress.

Not moving enough.

Individually, none of these may seem significant.

But when the same demands are repeated day after day, your body may eventually start telling you that something needs to change.

This is why I often ask patients:

What has changed recently?

Perhaps you've started a new job.

You're spending more time on your laptop.

You've been travelling more.

You've taken up a new exercise.

You've been under more stress.

Or maybe you've simply had less time to move.

Sometimes the pain isn't caused by one particular moment.

It's the result of many small stresses accumulating over time.

And this is also why I don't think the answer is always simply:
Fix your posture.

Instead, we need to look at the bigger picture.

How much are you moving?

How long are you staying in one position?

Are you getting enough recovery?

Are you strong enough for the activities you're asking your body to perform?

And perhaps most importantly:

What is your body trying to tell you?

Pain doesn't always mean something is seriously wrong.

But persistent or recurring pain shouldn't simply be ignored either.

Sometimes the most useful thing we can do is step back and understand the pattern.

🩺 Dr Kelvin's Takeaway

Pain doesn't always come from one big event. Sometimes, it's the accumulation of many small things.

What do you want your body to be able to do 10 years from now?

It’s a question I sometimes wish more people would ask themselves.

Not:

“How do I get rid of this pain?”

But:

“What do I want my body to be able to do in 10 years?”

Do you want to:

🏃‍♂️ Keep running?

🥾 Go hiking?

🏌️ Continue playing golf?

✈️ Travel without worrying about your back?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Keep up with your children or grandchildren?

🌱 Garden?

Or simply get out of bed, walk, bend and move without thinking twice about it?

These goals may seem very different, but they have something in common.

They all require a body that can move, adapt and recover.

That’s why I don’t think spine health should only be about treating pain when it appears.

It’s also about looking after the things that allow us to stay active and independent as we get older.

That doesn’t mean you need to exercise for two hours every day.

It doesn’t mean you need perfect posture.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to avoid every ache and pain.

Sometimes it’s much simpler:

Move regularly.

Build strength gradually.

Recover properly.

Pay attention when something doesn’t feel right.

And keep doing the activities you enjoy.

After more than 16 years in practice, one thing I’ve come to appreciate is that health isn’t really about the absence of problems.

It’s about having the capacity to live the life you want.

So here’s a question I’d like you to think about this weekend:

What do you want your body to still be able to do 10 years from now?

Because perhaps that’s the real reason we should take care of our spine today.

🩺 Dr Kelvin’s Takeaway

Don’t just think about feeling better today. Think about staying capable for the life ahead.

Move Better. Live Better.

**ASK DR KELVIN**

Is there really such a thing as perfect posture?

This is a question I get quite often.

And my answer may surprise you:

**NO.**

There isn't one perfect posture that everyone should maintain all day.

In fact, trying too hard to "sit up straight" can sometimes create another problem.

You become rigid.

Your shoulders stay tense.

You constantly remind yourself to pull your head back or push your chest forward.

And eventually, even "good posture" becomes uncomfortable.

The reality is that our bodies are designed to move.

We sit.

We stand.

We walk.

We bend.

We reach.

We shift our weight.

We change positions.

That's normal.

Rather than asking:

**"Am I sitting correctly?"**

I think a better question is:

**"How long have I been sitting like this?"**

If you've been at your desk for two hours, even a perfectly positioned workstation isn't going to make staying still for another two hours ideal.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your posture is simply to **change it**.

Stand up.

Walk around.

Stretch.

Look away from your screen.

Then sit back down in a comfortable position.

Your body doesn't need perfection.

It needs **movement, variety and the ability to adapt.**

🩺 **Dr Kelvin's Takeaway**

**Don't chase perfect posture. Build better movement habits.**

And if you've got a question about your spine, posture or movement, leave it in the comments.

It might be my next ** ** question.

Brain Rot Is Real… And Did You Know that Your Spine Is Part of the Problem

Check out this blogpost to find out more:

Oxford named 'brain rot' its word of the year for a reason. But the cognitive fog most people dismiss as a screen problem has a physical cause most experts miss — your spine.

Singapore officially becomes a super-aged society in 2026, meaning more than 1 in 5 citizens is now aged 65 and above. With nearly 790,000 residents in this age group today, and 1 in 4 citizens projected to be over 65 by 2030, healthy ageing has never been more urgent a conversation.

For many older Singaporeans, the biggest fear is not illness itself, it is the loss of independence. The inability to walk without pain, to carry grandchildren, to keep up with a morning exercise routine. This is where chiropractic care, done well, makes a real difference.

Check out this link to find out your elderly loved ones can benefit from geriatric chiropractic care:

❓ ASK DR KELVIN
Is cracking my neck bad for me?

This is a question I get quite often.

And like many things related to our spine, the answer isn't simply "yes" or "no".

That cracking or popping sound you hear from a joint doesn't necessarily mean that something is being damaged.

Joints can make sounds for several reasons, including changes in pressure within the joint and movement of the surrounding tissues.

So hearing a crack doesn't automatically mean:
❌ Your spine is "out of alignment"
❌ Your bones are rubbing together
❌ You've damaged your neck

But there's an important distinction.

Making a sound isn't the same as solving the problem.

Some people repeatedly crack their neck because it feels temporarily relieving when they're stiff or uncomfortable.

The sound itself isn't necessarily the issue.

The more important question is:
Why do you feel the need to keep cracking your neck?

If you're constantly feeling stiff, uncomfortable or compelled to move your neck in a particular way to get relief, that may be worth paying attention to.

Rather than chasing the next "crack", it may be more useful to understand what's contributing to the stiffness in the first place.

That could include prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, stress, muscle fatigue, previous injury—or simply spending too much time in one position.

And if neck discomfort is persistent, worsening, or associated with symptoms such as weakness, numbness, dizziness or significant headaches, it is more urgent in getting it properly assessed rather than simply trying to crack it away.

🩺 Dr Kelvin's Takeaway
Don't focus on the sound. Listen to what your body is telling you.
