Have your toenails become thick, yellow, hard, or impossible to cut? 🦶✂️

Most people instantly assume it’s a fungal infection, but that’s a very common misconception. The medical term for abnormally thickened nails is onychauxia, and it can actually be triggered by everyday things like tight shoes, old sports injuries, aging, or underlying conditions like psoriasis.

Why does this matter? Because if your thick nail is caused by shoe pressure or a damaged nail matrix, all the antifungal creams in the world won't fix it! Beyond just looking unusual, these thickened nails can become incredibly painful in closed shoes and pose serious pressure wound risks, especially for those with diabetes or poor circulation.

Stop guessing and discover what's really going on with your feet.

đź’ˇ Read our latest guide to understand the true causes of onychauxia, why toenails grow so slowly, and the professional podiatry treatments that can safely provide relief.

Onychauxia, also called onychauxis, is abnormal thickening of the nail plate. Learn why toenails become thick, yellow, painful or difficult to cut, and why not every thick nail is fungal.

A painful, yellow, swollen toenail is not always a fungal nail.

One commonly missed condition is called retronychia.

This happens when the nail plate stops growing forward properly and becomes trapped backwards under the skin fold at the base of the nail. It can look like:

• an ingrown toenail
• a fungal nail
• chronic paronychia
• a recurring nail infection

But the clue is often different: the pain and swelling are usually near the base of the nail, close to the cuticle — not just along the side.

Many patients try repeated antibiotics, creams or antifungal treatment, but the problem keeps coming back because the underlying issue may be structural and mechanical.

In our latest article, we explain what retronychia is, why it is so often missed, how it differs from common nail conditions, and when podiatric treatment may be needed.

If you suffer from unexplained lower back ache, knee pain, or foot pain—especially if it mostly bothers you on just one side — a "small" leg length difference might actually be the hidden culprit behind your discomfort.

In our latest article, our Clinical Director, Mark Reyneker, breaks down the truth about Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD). He has been helping patients with this condition for over 20 years. Whether it's a true structural difference in your bones or a functional issue caused by posture and muscle imbalance, a small discrepancy can matter a great deal.

Think about it: if you walk 8,000 steps a day, a tiny 5mm imbalance is repeated millions of times a year. For athletes, nurses, teachers, and anyone on their feet all day, this uneven loading adds up fast and can lead to:

🚨 Pelvic tilt and spinal compensation (lower back pain!)
🚨 Increased risk of knee and hip joint wear-and-tear
🚨Uneven foot pressure, heel pain, and stubborn calluses

The good news? You don't have to just live with it. In many cases, these symptoms can be easily managed with conservative care.

Read the full article to discover the clinical zones of LLD, the common symptoms to look out for, and why the old "less than 1 cm is fine" rule is outdated:

Did you know that an ingrown toenail is not always a nail that simply grows the wrong way. It is often a pressure problem. The nail edge, the skin beside the nail, the shoe, the shape of the toe and the way the big toe loads during walking all interact. When those forces repeatedly squeeze the skin against the nail, the area becomes inflamed and painful. There are a few options to manage ingrown toenails but it all depends on the underlying cause. Whatsapp "more info" for a comprehensive guide to what causes ingrown toenails.

HISTORY MADE: The 1:59:30 Marathon is here!

On April 26, 2026, Sabastian Sawe did what many thought was impossible in our lifetime—he became the first athlete to run an officially recognized marathon in under two hours!

But how did he do it? It wasn’t just about grit; it was a perfect storm of:

âś… Elite Biomechanics & Efficiency
âś… High-Altitude Training Mastery
âś… Next-Gen Super-Shoe Tech (The Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3)

As podiatrists, we’re fascinated by the science behind this 1:59:30 finish. What can everyday runners learn from Sawe’s "relaxed" efficiency? And should you be wearing the same 97g "super shoes" he used?

Read our full breakdown of this historic feat and what it means for the future of running.
