Why does bedtime feel like a daily battle for some families? 🌙

Sleep challenges often change as children grow. Toddlers may resist bedtime, older children may struggle with boundaries, while teenagers face increasing demands from school, screens and social life.

In Episode 2 of Night Mode On: Sleep in Kids and Teens, Dr Michael Lim shares why understanding the cause behind bedtime struggles is the first step towards better sleep.

Why do teenagers seem to stay up later as they get older?

Many parents assume it's due to screen time or poor sleep habits, but there may be another explanation: biology.

During puberty, a teenager's internal body clock naturally shifts later - a phenomenon known as circadian delay. As a result, they may not feel sleepy until one to two hours later than they did as children, even though they still need to wake up early for school.

When this delayed sleep schedule clashes with early school start times, many teenagers may end up getting less sleep than they need.

In Episode 2 of Night Mode On, Dr Michael Lim explains why teenage sleep patterns change during adolescence and what parents should know about supporting healthy sleep habits.

Have you noticed this change in your teenager, or do you remember experiencing it yourself?

Many parents focus on nutrition, exercise and academic performance, but how often do we think about whether our children are getting enough sleep?

Sleep needs change as we grow. While newborns may sleep up to 20 hours a day, school-age children and teenagers still require more sleep than many people realise.

Yet insufficient sleep remains a common concern among teenagers, affecting concentration, mood, learning and overall wellbeing.

Scroll through the carousel to learn:
• Recommended sleep durations by age
• Why sleep needs decrease as we grow older
• The role of naps in total sleep time
• Common misconceptions about children's sleep

Do you think children and teenagers today are getting enough sleep?

What happens when children don’t get enough sleep? 🌙

Sleep affects far more than energy levels alone. Over time, insufficient sleep can impact:
• Attention and focus
• Mood and behaviour
• Learning and school performance
• Daytime energy levels

In some cases, signs of poor sleep may even resemble symptoms commonly associated with ADHD.

Understanding sleep early plays an important role in supporting a child’s overall well-being and development.

Late-night studying may feel productive - but sleep is what helps the brain process and store what we learn. 🧠💤

For children and teenagers, sleep plays an important role in memory, focus, growth and overall well-being. Without enough rest, it becomes harder to concentrate, respond and perform at their best.

Late-night scrolling might feel harmless, but your screen could be quietly disrupting the body clock that shapes your sleep, energy, and focus.

In the final episode of Night Mode On Season 1, we explore how your body’s internal clock influences the way you sleep - and how habits like screen time and irregular routines can throw it out of sync.

Joining Cheryl is Dr. June Lo from the National University of Singapore, who shares insights on circadian rhythms, social jet lag, and why understanding your body clock matters more than you think.

Because better sleep isn’t always about forcing a routine - sometimes, it starts with understanding your body.

Ever feel like your body clock works differently on weekdays and weekends? ⏰🌙

Sleep scientists call this “social jet lag” - when your work or school schedule forces you to wake earlier than what your body naturally prefers, only for you to sleep and wake later once the weekend arrives.

In Episode 6 of Night Mode On, we explore chronotypes and circadian rhythms - how your internal body clock influences your sleep, energy and daily performance, and why some people naturally feel more awake later at night while others function best in the morning.

A closer look at how modern lifestyles may be disrupting our natural sleep rhythms more than we realise.

Stay tuned for the full episode this Thursday.
