Have you ever wondered why your vision is still blurry even after getting the "correct" glasses?

👁️ A 65-year-old gentleman visited us because he was struggling to see clearly at both distance and near. Even after finding the correct spectacle prescription, his vision could not be fully improved.

A detailed retinal examination revealed drusen—yellow deposits at the macula, the most important part of the retina responsible for our central vision. This is a common sign of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The important message is this:

⚠️ Not everyone with AMD experiences obvious symptoms in the early stages. Many people continue their daily lives without realizing that the retina is slowly changing. That's why regular eye health examinations are so important, especially from your 40s onwards.

Your retina works hard every day and needs proper nutrition to stay healthy. Research has shown that lutein and zeaxanthin, the two main components of macular pigment, help protect the retina from oxidative stress and may support long-term macular health. Together with a healthy diet, they play an important role in maintaining eye health.

✅ Don't just check your spectacle power.
✅ Check the health of your retina.
✅ Understand your macular pigment level and whether your eyes are receiving adequate nutritional protection.

Your eyesight is more than just a number on your glasses prescription.

💚 Speak to us during your next visit about eye nutrition, Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) testing, and how we can help you protect your vision for the years ahead.

A very interesting article from Review of Myopia Management that highlights a message I believe both parents and eye care professionals should think about carefully.

Is myopia management a product... or a programme?

Many people think myopia management simply means buying a special pair of spectacles, contact lenses, or eye drops.

The reality is that while a myopia management product may help reduce the rate of progression compared to standard correction, the product alone is not myopia management.

Myopia management is a process.

It involves:
👁️ A comprehensive eye examination
📏 Baseline and ongoing axial length measurements
🔍 Proper fitting and assessment of the chosen treatment option
📈 Monitoring of progression over time
⚙️ Adjustments when treatment response is not optimal
👨‍⚕️ Professional advice based on the child's individual risk profile
🏃 Lifestyle guidance involving outdoor time, near work habits, sleep, and visual behaviour

Think of it this way...

You can buy a running shoe online, but that does not automatically make you an athlete.

Likewise, purchasing a myopia management product does not automatically mean the child is receiving comprehensive myopia management.

As parents, the more important question may be:

Are you paying for a product?
Or
Are you investing in the knowledge, experience, and care of a practitioner who is helping protect your child's vision for the future?

Because ultimately, we are not simply managing spectacle power.

We are managing the growth of a child's eye.

We are trying to reduce the future risk of retinal complications, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma, and other vision-threatening conditions associated with excessive axial elongation.

The spectacle lens, contact lens, or eye drop may be the tool.

But the monitoring, interpretation, follow-up care, and clinical decision-making are equally important parts of the journey.

When it comes to your child's eyesight, would you choose a product alone, or a comprehensive programme designed to protect one of their most precious organs—their eyes?

We are delighted to share that our Optometrist, Dr. Alex Ong, has been featured in this week's Editor's Pick by Review of Myopia Management (RMM)! 🎉👏

In this featured article, Dr. Ong explores an interesting and thought-provoking topic: the possible relationship between sugar, metabolic pathways, and myopia progression.

While factors such as near work, screen time, and outdoor exposure are commonly discussed in myopia management, this article encourages us to think more broadly about the role of nutrition, lifestyle, and overall health in the development and progression of myopia.

At Ong's Optics & Myopia Management Centre, we strongly believe that myopia management is about more than just changing spectacle prescriptions. It is about understanding the child, the eye, the environment, and the long-term health of vision.

We are proud to see Dr. Ong's work recognised internationally and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to ongoing discussions that help advance eye care for children around the world.

Congratulations, Dr. Ong! 🎊

A recent CNA article highlighted something that many eye care professionals have been noticing for years — more children are developing myopia at a younger age, and more are progressing to higher levels of myopia than before. In Singapore, high myopia among children has increased significantly over the past decade, with some children being diagnosed as early as six years old.

The challenge with myopia is that it is often silent.

Children may not complain because blurry distance vision gradually becomes their "normal." By the time parents notice squinting, sitting very close to screens, or difficulty seeing the whiteboard, myopia may already be progressing.

More importantly, myopia is not just about the spectacle power.

As the eye becomes longer (axial elongation), the risk of future eye complications may increase. This is why regular monitoring is so important, especially during the growing years when myopia progression can be most rapid.

For parents, consider asking:
👁️ Is my child's myopia stable or progressing quickly?
👁️ How often should their eyes be reviewed?
👁️ Is their prescription changing faster than expected?
👁️ Are we monitoring only the spectacle power, or also the growth of the eye?

Early detection and proper eye examinations can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, what a child needs is not simply a stronger pair of glasses, but a comprehensive assessment to understand how their eyes are developing.

The goal is not just helping children see clearly today, but protecting their eye health for the future. ❤️

✨ Not all lutein supplements are made the same. 👀🌼

When it comes to eye health and nutritional support, quality, formulation, and ingredient selection truly matter.

Many people only look at the “mg” amount of lutein… but absorption, ingredient sourcing, ratio balance, and formulation simplicity may make a huge difference too.

Sometimes, a cleaner and more focused combination may actually allow better absorption and utilisation by the body. 💛

One ingredient that has also gained increasing attention is Astaxanthin — known for its strong antioxidant properties and its growing interest in visual comfort, digital eye fatigue, and overall ocular wellness support. ✨

Very excited to see the Marigold Complex Capsule by Kaiyuan Biotechnology receiving the 2026 Monde Selection Gold Award 🏆🌍

Awards are never the whole story, but it is always encouraging to see nutritional products being recognised internationally for quality and formulation standards.

Looking forward to sharing more educational content and discussions about nutrition, lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and eye health with everyone soon 👁️🌼

👁️✨ Did you know… not all children with myopia are managed the same way?

When most parents hear “myopia,” they often think:
➡️ “Just increase the spectacle degree every year.”

But modern myopia management is becoming much more than simply changing glasses power. 👓

Today, there are different evidence-based approaches that aim to help slow down myopia progression in children — including:
🔹 Specialised spectacle lenses
🔹 Orthokeratology (OK) lenses
🔹 Special-design soft contact lenses
🔹 Low-dose atropine eye drops

Each child’s eyes, lifestyle, prescription, and progression pattern can be different.
That’s why personalised myopia management is becoming increasingly important in protecting long-term eye health. 🌱

The goal is not just clearer vision today…
but helping to reduce the risk of higher myopia and future eye complications later in life.

💡 Which option do you think is the most interesting or surprising?
Many parents are surprised that some children can even wear specially designed lenses while sleeping or soft lenses designed to manage peripheral defocus!

📱👀 Is it REALLY the digital device causing myopia… or is it how we use our eyes?

Many parents worry that screens alone are damaging children’s eyes.
But the bigger issue may actually be prolonged near work — whether it’s phones, tablets, books, homework, or reading at very close distances for long periods without breaks.

When our eyes stay focused up close for too long, the eye muscles work continuously, which may contribute to eye fatigue, accommodative stress, and potentially increase myopia risk in children.

💡 Some simple visual habits may help:
✔️ Follow the 30–10 eye rest rule
✔️ Maintain a good reading distance
✔️ Reduce prolonged continuous near work
✔️ Spend more time outdoors under natural light
✔️ Prioritise good sleep and visual balance

Blue light itself may not directly “cause” myopia, but excessive screen exposure — especially late at night — can still affect visual comfort and sleep quality.

Small habits today may help support healthier eyes tomorrow. 🌿✨

🌳☀️ Outdoor Time & Children’s Vision — More Important Than We Think 👀
Many parents already know that outdoor time is beneficial for children’s eyes. Research consistently shows that children who spend more time outdoors tend to have a lower risk of developing myopia (short-sightedness) in the first place.

But one important question many parents ask is:
👉 “What if my child is already myopic?”

Current studies suggest that outdoor time alone may not dramatically stop myopia progression once myopia has already developed. However, that does not mean outdoor exposure is no longer useful.

Outdoor environments may still provide several important supportive benefits for growing children:
☀️ Brighter natural light exposure
Natural daylight stimulates retinal dopamine release, which is believed to play a role in healthy eye growth regulation.
🌳 Large open viewing spaces

Outdoor environments encourage children to look further away instead of continuously focusing up close. This may help reduce prolonged accommodative stress and constant near focusing.

😴 Light & Circadian Rhythm
Morning and daytime light exposure also help regulate the body’s circadian rhythm (body clock), which influences sleep timing, alertness, and overall wellbeing. Modern children often spend long hours indoors under artificial lighting, with heavy near work and screen exposure extending late into the night.
And realistically — not every family can achieve the often-recommended 2 hours outdoors daily. That’s okay. Small lifestyle habits still matter ❤️

Simple ways to increase outdoor light exposure:
🚶 Walk to school when possible
🌅 Short evening walks with family
☀️ Early morning sunlight exposure before school
⚽ More outdoor play and sports instead of indoor screen-based activities
🌳 Weekend park visits or outdoor family activities

Even early morning or late afternoon sunlight usually provides significantly higher light intensity compared to typical indoor environments. Every little bit helps.
Outdoor time should not be viewed as a “magic cure,” but rather as part of a healthier visual and lifestyle environment for children growing up in today’s digital world. 👁️✨
