Many people notice that driving at night feels different from their 40s onwards. While this is often dismissed as "just ageing", there may be several reasons behind the change.
As we age, our eyes naturally undergo changes. The pupils respond more slowly to light, the natural lens gradually yellows, and it can take longer to recover from glare caused by oncoming headlights.
However, reduced night vision may also be related to conditions such as early cataracts, changes in your spectacle prescription, dry eyes, or reduced contrast sensitivity. Some of these can be assessed and, where appropriate, treated.
If you've noticed increasing glare, halos, or difficulty seeing clearly when driving at night, it's worth having your eyes examined rather than assuming it's simply part of getting older.
