Why You Shouldn't Pop Pimples
Popping a pimple may seem like the quickest solution, but it often creates more problems than it solves.
When you squeeze a pimple, bacteria, oil, and debris can be pushed deeper into the skin, increasing inflammation and making the lesion larger, more painful, and slower to heal. Breaking the skin barrier also increases the risk of infection.
Popping pimples can also lead to:
More inflammation, which may worsen the breakout.
Spread of bacteria to nearby pores, triggering new pimples.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), causing dark marks that can persist for months.
Acne scarring, which is often much more difficult to treat than the pimple itself.
For smaller pimples, ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or retinoids may help reduce inflammation more safely. Hydrocolloid pimple patches can also protect the area and reduce the temptation to pick at the skin.
If a pimple is large, painful, persistent, or cystic, it's best to seek professional treatment rather than squeezing it yourself and risking unnecessary scarring.
🎥 In this video, Dr Daniel explains what really happens beneath the skin when you pop a pimple and why protecting the skin barrier is key to preventing acne scars.
