How Pepper May Help Reduce Diarrhea
1. Warming the 中焦 and Dispelling Cold
In TCM, 中焦 refers to the digestive region, particularly the Spleen and Stomach. These organs are believed to play essential roles in transforming food and fluids and maintaining normal digestion.
When Cold affects the 中焦, the digestive system may become less efficient, potentially resulting in abdominal pain, loose stools, watery diarrhea, and a preference for warmth. Pepper is traditionally classified as a pungent, hot ingredient that can warm the interior and dispel Cold. By warming the digestive region, pepper is believed to help restore the normal functioning of the Spleen and Stomach and relieve diarrhea associated with internal Cold.
2. Supporting Spleen and Stomach Function
According to TCM, the Spleen is responsible for transforming and transporting nutrients and fluids throughout the body. When Spleen function is impaired, fluids may not be properly transformed and transported, contributing to loose stools or diarrhea.
Pepper's warming and pungent properties are traditionally believed to help support digestive activity, particularly when Cold contributes to impaired digestion (钟赣生,2012). Its traditional use may therefore be relevant to diarrhea accompanied by abdominal discomfort, poor appetite, and a feeling of coldness.
However, pepper is not considered suitable for every type of diarrhea. In TCM practice, treatment depends on identifying the underlying pattern, rather than treating diarrhea as a single condition.
3. Promoting Qi Movement and Relieving Abdominal Discomfort
In TCM, Qi refers to the functional activity that supports the body's physiological processes. Cold and Qi stagnation may interfere with the normal movement of Qi in the digestive system, leading to abdominal discomfort, bloating, and altered bowel movements (吴勉华 & 王新月, 2017).
Pepper's pungent and warming nature is traditionally associated with promoting Qi movement and dispersing Cold. This may help relieve abdominal discomfort associated with Cold-related digestive disturbances and support more comfortable digestion.
