Happiest Heavenly Birthday, Dr Beck!
I have been meaning to write a birthday wish for him all day… thinking about what I remember most. Surprisingly, it isn’t the lectures, the theories, or even the fact that he changed the face of psychotherapy forever.
It was his humility. His humanity.
As a young therapist from Pakistan, I could never have imagined that one day I would have the privilege of sitting in the same room as the man whose work I had spent years studying. Training with Dr. Beck was a dream I never imagined would come true. Yet despite his towering reputation, there wasn’t an ounce of arrogance about him. He was so gentle, thoughtful… and incredibly kind.
One conversation has stayed with me all these years.
Knowing that I had trained extensively with my beloved mentor, Dr. Albert Ellis, he spoke about Al with such warmth, respect, and genuine affection. The world often likes to tell stories of rivalry between great pioneers, but that wasn’t what I witnessed. What I witnessed was something far more beautiful. I saw a side of him that genuinely cared for Al—a warmth and admiration that completely caught me by surprise.
That moment taught me something no textbook ever could.
It showed me what true greatness really looks like.
I often think about how incredibly fortunate I have been to learn from both Dr. Albert Ellis and Dr. Aaron Beck. Two men whose ideas shaped modern psychotherapy, but whose character left an even deeper imprint on me. Their personalities were different. Their therapeutic approaches were almost polar opposites. Yet both dedicated their lives to easing human suffering. Both remained lifelong students. And both reminded me that compassion belongs at the heart of everything we do.
Dr. Beck, thank you for your wisdom. Thank you for your humility. Thank you for the quiet dignity with which you carried your extraordinary legacy.
Happy Heavenly Birthday.
You are deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
What a privilege it was to learn from you.
