Improving patient experience through AI-enabled imaging ✨

MRI scans can be challenging for patients who find it difficult to stay still, are experiencing pain or feel claustrophobic. Spending less time in the scanner can make a meaningful difference to their experience.

SGH is using AI-enabled MRI technology to shorten scan times while maintaining the diagnostic image quality clinicians need. This means a more comfortable experience for patients, while enabling our radiography teams to support more patients as demand for medical imaging grows.

Newer Philips MRI systems also use less helium and energy, supporting a more efficient and sustainable approach to healthcare.

Small steps can lead to meaningful change. 🌱

Dr Dorinda Chew’s sustainability journey began with practical, achievable actions — and grew into something much bigger. Alongside her daily work, she serves as a Sustainability Director and was instrumental in SGH becoming the first hospital to have its Radiology department certified as a 6-Leaf Green Imaging Department.

Her experience has shown her that lasting change starts by making greener choices easier, measuring what matters and shifting mindsets over time.

A first of its kind procedure for Singapore!

On 24 August 2026, SGH successfully performed Singapore's first urethral bulking procedure using a polyacrylamide hydrogel based bulking system on three patients.

While urethral bulking has long been established as a treatment option for stress urinary incontinence, the polyacrylamide hydrogel bulking agent is a material that is not absorbed by the body and hence can remain in place where it is injected. This potentially provides a minimally invasive option for urinary incontinence management in suitable female patients.

SGH is proud to be the first to bring this polyacrylamide hydrogel urethral bulking system to suitable female patients.

Meet A/Prof Toh Song Tar, Deputy Chairman, Surgery, DSSO, who will be appointed Chairman, Division of Surgery & Surgical Oncology, SGH and NCCS, and Academic Chair, SingHealth Duke-NUS Surgery Academic Clinical Programme (SURG ACP), on 1 September 2026.

A/Prof Toh is the immediate past Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery (ENT-HNS) and former Head of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Sleep Centre. Since taking on his current role in October 2025, he has led key initiatives including the review of surgical procedure codes, dedicated specialised surgical teams and the development of a disciplinary framework subsequently adopted by SingHealth. He has also led the SingHealth OT network and ENT-Audiology Systemness initiatives, advancing care and service transformation.

Beyond clinical leadership, A/Prof Toh is active in academia, research and education. He holds academic appointments at NUS and Duke-NUS Medical School, and received the Duke-NUS Clinician Trialist Award for his role as Principal Investigator of three industry-sponsored first-in-human clinical trials on neuromodulation for obstructive sleep apnea. At the national level, he chairs the Joint Committee Specialist Training Examination Committee for Otolaryngology.

A collegial and collaborative leader, A/Prof Toh is well positioned to build on the strong foundations of the Division and SURG ACP.
