Recently, we celebrated our 10th birthday with a gala dinner, bringing together doctors, partners, and colleagues from Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

It was a wonderful evening to reflect on a decade of growth, celebrate the relationships that have shaped our journey, and reaffirm our shared commitment to continue improving cancer care across the region.

To everyone who joined us, thank you for being part of this special occasion and for the role you have played in our story over the past decade. Your partnership, trust, and dedication continue to inspire us as we look towards the future.

This World Lung Cancer Day, letโ€™s shine a light on a common misconception: lung cancer only affect smokers. A diagnosis can happen even without a history of smoking.

However, a local study in Singapore found that 48% of lung cancer patients were never-smokersโ€”defined as individuals who have never smoked or have smoked fewer than 100 ci******es in their lifetime.

Many of these patients are diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), characterised by the presence of epidermal growth factor receptor mutations (EGFR). EGFR is a protein found on the surface of certain cells that regulates cell division and survival. An EGFR mutation can cause these proteins to grow abnormally, leading to the rapid division of cancer cells.

In ASEAN, cultural factors such as mental health stigma, deep respect for healthcare authority, and a tendency to place less emphasis on personal emotional expression can shape how cancer patients experience and communicate psychological distress.

Annie Nguyen (Regional Manager, Clinical Quality and Governance) shares why culturally sensitive psychological assessment is essential to delivering truly person-centred cancer care, and the critical role nurses play in recognising and responding to patients' often unspoken emotional needs.

As part of this effort, Annie shares insights from the pilot implementation of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Distress Thermometer across our Singapore centres earlier this year. The initiative aims to strengthen the identification of patient distress and support more comprehensive emotional wellbeing care.

By embedding culturally sensitive psychological assessment into cancer care, we hope to better support both the physical and emotional wellbeing of every patient.

We are proud to see Prof Kong Hwai Loong, Medical Oncologist at Icon Cancer Centre, chair the MSI CRC Collective, a scientific meeting dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of microsatellite instability colorectal cancer (MSI CRC).

Bringing together more than 80 surgeons and medical oncologists, alongside local and international experts, the meeting fostered meaningful discussions on emerging evidence, evolving treatment strategies and best practices in the management of colorectal cancer. These exchanges are essential in translating the latest research into better, more personalised care for patients.

What began in 2016 as a network of five oncologists across four centres has evolved into a regional oncology platform comprising more than 100 specialists and 10 centres throughout Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Our growth is measured not only by scale, but by our commitment to expand access to quality cancer care. Today, four oncologists from Singapore, together with six visiting surgeons and physician, have been granted licence to practice at Bali International Hospital, Indonesia, marking an important milestone in our efforts to bring world-class cancer care closer to communities in Indonesia and across the region.
