What can we offer our pets as they approach their final journey?
From my perspective as an animal communicator, two meaningful gifts are holding space and giving permission.
1. Holding space
For years, they have been beside us—making us laugh with their silly ways, licking our tears and keeping us company through difficult chapters.
Through their companionship, we may have learnt to trust ourselves, recognise our worth and love ourselves more gently.
As their journey draws to a close, we can offer that tenderness back.
Holding space means staying present: a familiar voice, quiet company and gentle touch, if they welcome it.
When worry rises, pause, take a gentle breath and return to the moment you are sharing.
You can cry and still offer reassurance. You do not have to be perfectly calm to be a loving presence.
“I’m here. You are loved. Thank you for sharing your life with me.”
2. Giving permission
For me, giving permission is a heartfelt way to acknowledge their journey and express our intention to keep caring for ourselves.
The part of you that wants to say “please don’t go” deserves compassion, too. You can feel that longing and still offer loving permission.
“When your time comes, it is okay to rest. I will miss you deeply. I will take things one day at a time, accept support and look after myself. Your love and everything you have taught me will stay in my heart.”
To me, the intention behind these words matters. Take a moment to connect with what you are saying.
You do not have to promise that you will immediately be okay. Promise what you can sincerely offer: to seek support, care for yourself and carry their lessons into your life.
Let that tenderness come through in your voice, your touch and your presence.
And be gentle with yourself, too. There is no perfect goodbye. If the words do not come, sitting quietly beside them can be your way of holding space.
We carry their love forward each time we practise the strength, self-love and kindness they helped us find. 💚
