Austen got into Oxford. He also has hearing loss and cochlear implants.

"I had four interviews to get into my university, and I had to be really confident in those. The fact that I could communicate well helped massively, obviously," he says.

Austen now studies computer science, has an active social life, and helps others in a similar situation as a Hearpeers Mentor.

At six, Rian was diagnosed with single-sided deafness but received a CI only a year ago in their mid-twenties.
