Heart attacks occur when a blockage in one or more coronary arteries reduces or stops blood flow to the heart.

When a heart attack is suspected, prompt diagnosis is essential for timely treatment to restore blood flow, limit heart muscle damage, reduce the risk of complications and improve long-term recovery.

Having accompanied his father (a family physician) on hospital rounds when he was a child, 𝗗𝗿 𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 became acutely aware of the pain, despair and grief that patients experience.

He felt compelled to do more, and this inspired his journey into medicine and shaped the way he connects with his patients all these years.

Using ultrasound to capture images, echocardiograms are diagnostic tests that assess the condition, function, and structure of the heart. Besides helping to identify the root cause behind symptoms, they can also help detect and monitor the progression of any existing heart diseases.

The procedure process depends on the type of echocardiogram performed:

• 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: You will lie comfortably while gel is applied to your chest. A handheld device (transducer) is then moved across the chest to capture live ultrasound images of the heart. You may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly so clearer images can be taken.

• 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: To keep you comfortable, a mild sedative and throat numbing agent may be given. A thin, flexible tube with a small transducer is carefully passed through the mouth into the oesophagus, where it can capture clearer images of the heart at close range.

• 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺: Electrodes will be attached to your chest to monitor your heart rhythm; your blood pressure may also be checked. Your heart is then placed under stress through exercise, such as walking on a treadmill, or through medication when needed. Images are captured at intervals to show how your heart functions under increased workload.

Nuclear cardiology tests are non-invasive, low-risk imaging tests that help assess heart function and evaluate blood flow to the heart.

During the test, a small amount of radiotracer is injected into the body. A scanner then captures images of the heart when stressed (by exercising on a treadmill) or at rest, in order to measure blood flow and whether the radiotracer is being evenly distributed.
