An electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) records your heart’s electrical activity and converts it into a visual reading for analysis.

It may be used to investigate the causes of chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or palpitations, as well as to detect irregular heart rhythms and assess how the heart is functioning.

At 𝗘𝗛 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁, the most suitable ECG test will be recommended based on your symptoms and clinical needs:

1. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗖𝗚: Performed while you are lying down and at rest, this can help detect arrhythmias, signs of myocardial infarction, and other cardiac concerns.

2. 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗖𝗚: Carried out while you are exercising on a treadmill or stationary bike, this can help identify issues that may not be visible at rest, such as exercise-induced arrhythmias or reduced blood flow to the heart (ischemia).

3. 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗖𝗚: Worn for 24 to 48 hours, this detects irregularities that may not appear during a shorter ECG test.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) refers to an unexpected natural death that happens due to cardiac causes. It can happen to anyone, at any age. In Singapore, around three cases occur daily, with about half affecting individuals aged 60 and below.

In many cases, SCD occurs in people with an underlying heart condition—undetected.

For those under 35, SCD is more commonly linked to congenital or inherited heart conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital coronary artery abnormalities, or long QT syndrome.
