Does Coffee Actually Give You Energy?

"Ever wonder why coffee gives you energy? Here's the interesting part—it doesn't actually create energy."
Caffeine doesn't give your body more energy.
Instead, it blocks a chemical in your brain called adenosine.
Throughout the day, adenosine gradually builds up and makes you feel sleepy.
By blocking it, caffeine temporarily makes you feel more alert and less tired.
But here's the catch.
You're not removing your tiredness.
You're simply delaying when you feel it.
It's a little like borrowing alertness from later in the day.
Eventually, when the caffeine wears off, the tiredness catches up.
So this is how I'd bend it:
Caffeine doesn't create energy—it temporarily hides tiredness.

Can poor sleep make you gain weight?

Can sleeping less actually make you gain weight? The answer is yes—but probably not for the reason you think."
Poor sleep doesn't magically slow your metabolism overnight.
Instead, it changes your behaviour.
When you're tired, you're more likely to feel hungry, snack more often, and choose high-calorie foods.
At the same time, you may have less energy to exercise and even move less during the day.
Those small changes can add up over weeks and months.
So while one bad night's sleep won't make you gain weight, chronic poor sleep can make maintaining a healthy weight much more difficult.
This is one reason why people who consistently sleep too little are more likely to develop obesity and metabolic problems over time.
So this is how I'd bend it:
Poor sleep doesn't directly cause weight gain—but it quietly changes the habits that do.

Thank you Honeycombers for including my thoughts in this balanced article on weight-loss injections in Singapore.

These medicines can be powerful tools—but ultimately, medicine should focus on improving health, not simply changing appearance.

From Ozempic and Wegovy, doctors explain why weight-loss injections are reshaping obesity treatment in Singapore.

Why Poor Sleep Increases Hunger

Ever notice you're much hungrier after a bad night's sleep? It's not just a lack of willpower."
Poor sleep doesn't just make you tired.
It can also change the hormones that regulate appetite.
One hormone called ghrelintends to increase. Ghrelin tells your brain you're hungry.
Another hormone called leptintends to decrease. Leptin helps signal that you've had enough to eat.
The result?
Many people feel hungrier and crave high-calorie foods like sweets and fatty snacks.
At the same time, being tired makes it much harder to resist those cravings or make healthy food choices.
So this is how I'd bend it:
If you're constantly hungry, don't just look at your diet. Sometimes the first place to look is your sleep.

When Is the Best Time to Exercise — Before or After Eating?

"Should you exercise before breakfast, or after a meal?"
This myth actually comes from a real observation.
If you exercise on an empty stomach, your body does burn a higher proportion of fat during that workout.
For example, during a 500-calorie workout, you might burn around 300 calories from fat if you're fasted, compared with around 200 calories after eating.
So why doesn't everyone exercise before breakfast?
Because over weeks and months, studies show that people lose very similar amounts of body fat either way.
That's because your body adjusts what it burns during the rest of the day, and total calorie balance still plays the biggest role.
If you've eaten beforehand, you'll also often have more energy, allowing you to train harder or lift heavier.
That's how I would bend it today.
Whether you exercise before or after eating is far less important than exercising consistently and choosing the approach that helps you perform your best.

Medicine isn’t always dramatic.
Sometimes success is:
sleeping a little better,
walking a little further,
or worrying a little less.
