Emergency 24/7 stenting and balloon service was started in 2009 in Singapore. Prior to that we would have given strong clot busters for that, emergency stenting was a much better option but required manpower and resources.

The number of heart attacks in Singapore is projected to rise almost three-fold from about 480 cases per 100,000 people this year, to around 1,400 by 2050.

It takes a village

Young healthy male presented with paroxysmal AF and was in sinus rhythm when seen at A+E, oxygen was unusually low at 87% for an otherwise healthy person, ECG showed classical S1Q3T3 features and a CTPA confirmed the presence of a large “saddle” Pulmonary Embolism (PE). It was increasingly difficult to maintain oxygen levels despite increasing oxygen to the patient. We activated our “The Heart Practice” team and performed an emergency pulmonectomy. Large clots were retrieved and patient’s parameters quickly improved. Still some ways to go but this will speed up patient’s recovery.
