EnvisioningHealth newsletter: https://for.sg/envisioninghealth The National University Hospital (NUH) is Singaporeโ€™s leading university hospital. While the hospital at Kent Ridge first received its patients on 24 June 1985, our legacy started from 1905, the date of the founding of what is today the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Our unique identity as a unive

rsity hospital is a key attraction for healthcare professionals who aspire to do more than practise tertiary medical care. We offer an environment where research and teaching are an integral part of medicine, and continue to shape medicine and transform care for the community we care for. We are an academic medical centre with over 1,200 beds, serving more than one million patients a year with over 50 medical, surgical and dental specialties. NUH is the only public and not-for-profit hospital in Singapore to provide trusted care for adults, women and children under one roof, including the only paediatric kidney and liver transplant programme in the country. The NUH is a key member of the National University Health System (NUHS), one of three public healthcare clusters in Singapore. Visit our website at www.nuh.com.sg.

Chronic hepatitis B affects more than 240 million people worldwide and remains a leading cause of liver cancer. Advancing treatment options is critical to improving outcomes for patients.

An international trial co-led by Prof Lim Seng Gee involving more than 1,800 patients across 29 countries, including Singapore, marks an important milestone in the fight against chronic hepatitis B.

The study found that approximately one in five patients achieved a functional cure after treatment with the investigational therapy, bepirovirsen. The findings offer hope for patients and advance new treatment possibilities that could provide long-term control of the disease without the need for lifelong therapy.

By bringing the goal of a functional cure within reach, this research represents a significant step towards transforming the future of chronic hepatitis B care.

As chronic diseases become increasingly interconnected, understanding how they interact is key to improving patient outcomes.

Drawing on data representing nearly 98 million adults, a population-based study led by Dr Nicholas Chew revealed the growing burden of cardiovascular, kidney, liver and metabolic (CKLM) diseases. This study also found that the risk of death and cardiovascular complications, such as heart failure and heart attack rises significantly when these conditions occur together.

The findings provide valuable evidence to support earlier identification of high-risk patients and reinforces the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to preventing and managing chronic diseases.

Research is at the heart of an academic medical centre. It challenges assumptions, informs clinical practice, and helps shape the future of healthcare.

Through a randomised clinical trial involving 9,000 women in Singapore, a team led by Professor Lee Soo Chin found that simple, scalable approaches such as a one-time mailed reminder, may be just as effective as more complex interventions in encouraging mammogram uptake among women overdue for repeat screening.

Their findings provide valuable evidence-based insights that can help future screening programmes become more effective, accessible, and resource-efficient.

NUH achieved several significant milestones at HIMSS APAC 2026, reflecting our commitment to healthcare innovation, digital transformation and global collaboration. ๐Ÿ‘

A key highlight was NUH's recognition as a Founding Member of the HIMSS AI Outcomes Framework. As part of NUHS' broader push for responsible AI adoption, NUH is the first institution in the cluster to embark on this journey. Through this role, NUH will contribute real-world evidence and outcomes data to help shape practical benchmarks, measurement frameworks and implementation roadmaps for AI in healthcare.

Prof Aymeric Lim was at the Huawei Intelligent Healthcare Forum: AI for Health, Health for All, to share insights on harnessing AI and innovation to improve patient outcomes and drive healthcare transformation.

At the invitation-only CXO AI Summit, Adj A/Prof Gao Yujia joined healthcare and industry leaders to discuss AI return on investment, governance and the foundations for enterprise-scale adoption.

Together, these engagements highlight NUH's role in advancing evidence-based AI adoption and shaping the future of healthcare through innovation and collaboration.

This year, we had the honour of hosting the National Day Observance Ceremony at NUH, bringing colleagues together to celebrate Singapore's 61st birthday and reflect on this year's theme "Majulah Singapura, Go Beyond!"

Graced by Mr Chee Hong Tat, Minister for National Development, the event was a timely reminder that healthcare workers go beyond every day through caring for patients, supporting colleagues, mentoring one another, or finding better ways to deliver care.

A highlight of the celebration was a performance of Reach Out for the Skies by colleagues from Critical Care, Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery, Human Resource, as well as NUHCS - National University Heart Centre, Singapore and National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore. Different roles, different departments, united by a shared commitment to care.

At NUH, going beyond is reflected in the many acts of dedication, teamwork, and service that take place every day.

To all our colleagues, thank you for making a difference to patients and their families.๐ŸŒŸ

Struggling to follow conversations even with hearing aids? You're not alone, and there may be other options available.

Unlike traditional hearing aids which amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged areas of the ear and directly stimulate the hearing nerve, helping individuals with severe-to-profound hearing loss regain clarity.

Join our upcoming Cochlear Implant Health Talk on 12 September 2026 to learn how cochlear implants work and hear directly from cochlear implant recipients about their journeys.
