It was a privilege to speak on Cataracts and Glaucoma to such an engaged audience in Jakarta. I truly enjoyed sharing knowledge on eye health, answering thoughtful questions, and connecting with so many wonderful people.

It was also a pleasure to share the stage with my fellow ophthalmologist, Dr Roy Tan, who gave an excellent talk on eyelid conditions. Grateful for the warm hospitality, meaningful conversations, and the opportunity to make new friends and professional connections.

Looking forward to many more opportunities to promote eye health together.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Had an episode of "sore eyes" (viral conjunctivitis).

But when the eye redness went away, your vision became blur?

A detailed eye examination reveals the diagnosis.

Treatment typically includes prescription anti-inflammatory eye drops (steroids) and lubricants.

Most people have heard of glaucoma โ€” but fewer know that it comes in more than one form, and that the type you have shapes everything about how it's treated.

The most common form is primary open-angle glaucoma, where the drainage channels in the eye become gradually less effective over time. Pressure builds slowly, silently, and peripheral vision starts to erode โ€” often without the patient noticing anything at all until significant damage has already occurred.

Angle-closure glaucoma is less common but far more dramatic. When the drainage angle between the iris and cornea narrows or becomes blocked, pressure can spike rapidly. This is a medical emergency โ€” sudden eye pain, headache, blurred vision and halos around lights are warning signs that demand immediate attention.

Understanding which type you have matters enormously, because the treatment approaches differ. Open-angle glaucoma is typically managed with medicated eye drops, laser therapy such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), or Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS). Angle-closure glaucoma may require a laser iridotomy to create an alternative drainage pathway.

What both types share is this: the sooner they are caught, the more vision can be preserved. Glaucoma cannot be reversed โ€” but it can almost always be controlled if detected early enough.

If you are over 40, have a family history of glaucoma, or have been told you have raised eye pressure, a comprehensive screening is the most important step you can take for your long-term sight.

One year ago, I stepped away from public healthcare and into a new chapter in private eye care.

It wasn't an easy transition. There were new systems to learn, new challenges to navigate, and plenty of moments of uncertainty. Looking back, though, this past year has reminded me that growth often begins just outside our comfort zone.

I'm deeply grateful to the mentors who generously shared their wisdom, to my former colleagues who continue to inspire me, and to the new friends and teammates I've met along the way.

Beyond work, this new chapter has also given me something I didn't expect to appreciate as muchโ€”more time for family, hobbies, and the people who matter most.

Most importantly, my purpose hasn't changed. Every day, I'm privileged to help patients see better, preserve their precious sight, and serve the community through outreach and eye screening initiatives.

To every patient who has placed their trust in me, thank you. It is a privilege to be part of your eye care journey.

And to my family and friends, thank you for your unwavering support through every step of this transition.

One year down, with many more lessons to learn. Here's to continuing to grow, give back, and provide the best care I can.

Colours looking faded? Headlights glowing with halos at night? It may not be "just old age" - it could be a cataract.

In this video I show you what happens inside your eye, and how a short day-surgery brings the world back into focus.

Honoured to be interviewed by and to contribute to this feature on managing red eyes.

Red eyes are a common symptom with many possible causes, ranging from dry eye and eyelid diseases to allergies, infections, and occasionally sight-threatening eye conditions. Raising public awareness about when to seek professional care is an important part of protecting vision and eye health.

Grateful to The Straits Times for the opportunity, and to my fellow ophthalmology colleagues and healthcare professionals who also shared their expertise in this article. Public education is always strongest when we work together.

A meaningful discussion with TCM Eye Specialist () on the complementary roles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine in eye care.

We exchanged perspectives on the management of glaucoma, dry eye disease, cataracts, and retinal disorders, exploring how an integrated, patient-centred approach may help optimize outcomes and enhance overall eye health for our patients.

Always valuable to learn across disciplines and broaden our understanding of patient care.
