Partnering with private healthcare facilities in Somalia and Somaliland, using the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach, to break down barriers to medical care and improve accessibility, affordability, and effectiveness for all. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperationโ€™s Private Sector Partnerships in Health (PSPH) programme, implemented by DT Global, pioneers the Market Systems Devel

opment (MSD) approach in the health sector to enhance access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Somali citizens, including marginalized groups. Operating across Somalia and Somaliland, DT Global is collaborating with the Somali Research and Development Institute (SORDI) and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) to develop pro-poor healthcare financing mechanisms and strengthen private sector health service delivery. As the worldโ€™s only MSD health programme and Somaliaโ€™s sole donor-funded initiative engaging commercial private providers, PSPH delivers technical assistance and drives innovation without grants. With a lean team, PSPH has successfully launched dozens of interventions, supported providers serving over 853,000 patients, introduced Somaliaโ€™s first affordable health insurance products, and trained over 500 healthcare professionals in hospital management and business skills.

A healthier future for women begins with accessible, responsive care. The Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi (SDC)-funded PSPH project is committed to advancing this vision by working with partners to develop and scale solutions that guarantee both access to and affordability of care.

Over the past week, in collaboration with Somaliland Family Health Association SOFHA, our team in Hargeisa continued expanding access to maternal healthcare through ๐”๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ค๐ก๐ž๐ฒ๐ซ ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž, a new affordable maternity cover designed to support women throughout their motherhood journey.

We also continue to engage young women, young men, and older women, listening to their experiences to further refine this product and improve service delivery. At the same time, we are working with communities to respond to the growing demand for age-responsive healthcare packages addressing postmenopausal health, diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle support.

Hikma Hospital in Mogadishu, with support from the PSPH Project, recently launched a Chronic Illness Package designed to reduce the financial burden of diabetes and hypertension care in Somalia.

The initiative introduces an alternative health financing model tailored to Somaliaโ€™s healthcare realities, offering members a 30% reduction in consultation, treatment, and follow-up costs, helping to protect vulnerable households from already high out-of-pocket spending.

More than 98 participants, including patients, partners, and healthcare workers, attended the launch. One patient, who has been managing diabetes with the same physician for 11 years, described the package as โ€˜a lifelineโ€™ for sustaining regular care.

โ€œI am happy to benefit from this discounted health service,โ€ added the patient.

As chronic diseases rise across fragile health systems, scalable financing solutions like this can strengthen continuity of care, improve health outcomes, and advance equitable access. Expanding such models will require stronger partnerships and sustained investment.

Networking events create valuable opportunities to strengthen collaboration, break down barriers, and connect previously fragmented healthcare providers, fostering better referral systems and improved patient care.

Last week, our partner, Heelan Healthcare in Mogadishu, supported by the PSPH project, hosted a Doctor & Healthcare Provider Engagement and Networking Event to enhance collaboration within Somaliaโ€™s private health sector.

The event also marked the official opening of Heellan Healthcareโ€™s new state-of-the-art facility, expanding from its former identity as Heellan Homecare into a fully integrated healthcare provider.

Attendees, including doctors, clinics, and hospitals, explored Heelanโ€™s service model, featuring home-based care, physiotherapy, outpatient services, and pharmacy support.

The event laid a strong foundation for partnerships that will improve healthcare quality and access across Somalia.

PSPH recently organised a clinical training session for members of the Caafinet network, facilitated by an experienced anaesthesiologist from our partner, the Somali Medical Association (SMA).

The session brought together 27 healthcare professionals (16 women and 11 men), demonstrating strong engagement and commitment to continuous learning.

The training focused on the practical management of acute pain to strengthen participantsโ€™ clinical knowledge and enhance their skills in evidence-based pain assessment and management within healthcare settings.

Highly interactive in nature, the session encouraged active participation through question-and-answer segments and practical, case-based discussions. The training was completed and received very positive feedback from participants, reflecting its relevance and impact on clinical practice.

Yesterday, our team delivered a hospital management training session for partner health facilities in Mogadishu, bringing together around 25 participants drawn from 12 partner facilities across the city, including newly onboarded ones.

We focused on strengthening core management competencies, including operational efficiency, financial management and cost control, quality of service delivery, and overall facility sustainability. These are critical aspects in healthcare management.

Designed to be highly interactive, this training combined practical case discussions, group exercises, and peer learning, enabling facilities to share experiences and align on good practices. Peer-to-peer learning was also used to assess and simulate situations for management action.

This is a reflection of the Embassy of Switzerland in Nairobi-funded PSPHโ€™s continued commitment to building resilient, well-managed health systems through targeted, practical capacity-building.

Our team in Hargeisa, together with our partner, Somaliland Family Health Association SOFHA, continued to expand access to maternal healthcare through the newly launched ๐”๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ค๐ก๐ž๐ฒ๐ซ ๐๐š๐œ๐ค๐š๐ ๐ž, an affordable maternity cover designed to support women throughout their motherhood journey.

During a recent outreach in 31-ka May District on the outskirts of Hargeisa, 68 women participated in health education and womenโ€™s wellness discussions, with 23 ๐ฐ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง ๐ž๐ง๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ.

The engagement revealed strong interest in routine pregnancy care among younger women, alongside growing demand for age-responsive healthcare packages addressing postmenopausal health, diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle support.

A healthier future for women begins with accessible, responsive care.

Access to maternal healthcare should never depend on the ability to pay. Thatโ€™s why working with Amal Ahmed-led Somaliland Family Health Association SOFHA staff, with support from the PSPHโ€™s Intervention Managers and Health Financing teams, developed ๐”๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ค๐ก๐š๐ฒ๐ซ, an alternative health financing product designed to make maternal health services more affordable and accessible.

๐”๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ค๐ก๐š๐ฒ๐ซ offers two packages: Antenatal Care (ANC) and ANC plus delivery, including referral support for highโ€‘risk cases and previous caesarean sections.

Following a successful threeโ€‘week pilot, the product is now rolling out through community launch events. At the second launch, held in Hargeisa, we engaged over 50 women, mostly of reproductive age, through health education, dialogue, and product promotion.

While younger women expressed strong interest in routine pregnancy care, older women highlighted unmet needs, from menopausal support to weight management and chronic disease care.

As such, closing gaps in maternal health requires ageโ€‘responsive, womenโ€‘centred financing solutions, which we are happy to conceptualise across Somalia.

On April 27, 2026, Kaafi Hospital in Somalia concluded the second phase of a PSPHโ€‘supported training programme aimed at strengthening patientโ€‘centred care. This intervention demonstrates how incremental investments in service quality can drive wider systemic change in fragile health systems.

The training brought together 29 staff members (21 women and 8 men) from across hospital departments and focused on practical skills often overlooked in resourceโ€‘constrained settings, including ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ž๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ฒ in patient interactions, and consistent ๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐๐ฌ.

The hospital leadership underscored that improving patient experience is not merely a matter of courtesy but a prerequisite for rebuilding trust in healthcare institutions, increasing service uptake, and improving health outcomes.

In contexts such as Somalia, where health systems remain under strain from various issues, including underinvestment, such capacityโ€‘building initiatives play a catalytic role. By embedding patientโ€‘centred practices into everyday service delivery, hospitals can begin to shift organisational culture, laying the groundwork for more resilient, accountable, and peopleโ€‘focused health systems.
