Disability Aid Foundation - DAF is pleased to have participated in the Regional Workshop on Disability-Inclusive Food Security, organised by Handicap International - Humanity & Inclusion in Nairobi, Kenya, from 13–16 October 2026.

On behalf of DAF, we extend our sincere appreciation to Humanity & Inclusion for organising this important learning and exchange opportunity, bringing together humanitarian actors, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), and other stakeholders to strengthen disability inclusion in food security programming.

The workshop provided a valuable platform to share experiences, identify barriers faced by persons with disabilities, and explore practical solutions for inclusive Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) programming, particularly Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA).

Key lessons reinforced the importance of meaningful participation of OPDs, accessible registration and distribution points, inclusive communication and feedback mechanisms, disability-disaggregated data, and reasonable accommodations to ensure equitable access to humanitarian assistance.

For DAF, these lessons are particularly relevant to Somalia, where persons with disabilities affected by conflict, displacement, drought and food insecurity must be actively included in humanitarian responses.

We are grateful to HI and all participating organisations for their commitment to learning, collaboration and advancing disability-inclusive humanitarian action. DAF looks forward to translating these lessons into practical action and strengthening partnerships to ensure that persons with disabilities are not left behind.

𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀.

A durable solution is not achieved simply because a displaced family has found a place to stay. It is achieved when people can rebuild their lives with safety, dignity, rights and opportunities.

In Somalia, displacement remains a complex, protracted challenge shaped by conflict, climate shocks, insecure housing and land tenure, and limited access to essential services. The 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan emphasizes the importance of connecting immediate humanitarian assistance with longer-term recovery and development.

For internally displaced persons with disabilities, returning home, integrating locally or relocating to another community may present additional barriers. Inaccessible housing, inadequate sanitation, disrupted rehabilitation services, limited livelihood opportunities and inaccessible information can undermine their ability to rebuild their lives independently.

These barriers must be addressed within Somalia’s durable solutions agenda not treated as separate disability concerns.

For Disability Aid Foundation -DAF, disability-inclusive durable solutions mean ensuring that settlement planning considers accessibility, livelihood programmes provide equitable opportunities, essential services remain accessible, and persons with disabilities participate meaningfully in decisions about their future.

It also means strengthening collaboration between government institutions, organizations of persons with disabilities, humanitarian agencies and development partners to ensure that disability inclusion is reflected in area-based recovery plans, service delivery and progress monitoring.

Somalia’s displacement response must move beyond meeting immediate needs toward creating conditions in which displaced people can exercise their rights, restore their livelihoods and participate fully in community life.

Disability Aid Foundation (DAF), Somalia, participated in the KISE Conference 2026, held on 6–7 October 2026 at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) under the theme “𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜).”

The conference brought together government institutions, educators, OPDs, families, researchers, innovators, and disability practitioners to examine how assistive technology can contribute to meaningful inclusion across the life course.

A central message throughout the conference was clear: 𝗔 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Meaningful assistive technology requires appropriate assessment, fitting, training, maintenance, follow-up, accessible services, sustainable financing and reliable disability data. It also requires persons with disabilities and their representative organisations to be meaningfully involved in designing solutions and influencing decisions.

The discussions on early identification, decentralized services, local production and repair, teacher and caregiver capacity, data, financing and accessibility by design provide important lessons for Somalia.

Disability Aid Foundation-DAF will continue to draw on these lessons to strengthen its work in inclusive education, rehabilitation, assistive technology, and disability-inclusive humanitarian and development programming, and to promote systems that enable people with disabilities to participate fully and equally.

From technology to meaningful participation, this is where inclusion must lead.

This landmark legislation represents a major victory for the disability movement and a powerful commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities in Somalia.

At Disability Aid Foundation (DAF), we recognize that the launch of the law is not the end of the journey, it is the beginning of a new chapter. The real success will be measured by how effectively the law is implemented, ensuring that persons with disabilities have equal access to education, employment, healthcare, justice, and public services.

We commend the Government of Somalia, Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), civil society, and development partners whose collective efforts made this achievement possible.

DAF remains committed to supporting the implementation of the law and advancing an inclusive Somalia where no one is left behind.

Together, let us turn rights into reality.

Driving Global Action for Disability-Inclusive Humanitarian Coordination

Disability Aid Foundation (DAF) proudly participated in the LNOB Phase 4 Global Workshop on Disability Inclusive Humanitarian Coordination held in Douala, Cameroon, a transformative five-day global engagement that brought together OPDs, humanitarian actors, and disability inclusion champions from across different countries.

The workshop created a strong platform for collaboration, peer learning, and strategic reflection on strengthening disability-inclusive humanitarian systems and ensuring meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in emergency response and coordination mechanisms.

Throughout the five days, participants explored critical thematic areas including humanitarian coordination, country-context presentations, humanitarian reset discussions, key informant interview findings, disability-inclusive data systems, OPD engagement and leadership, uptake and localization of tools and guidance, inclusive food security training approaches, marketplace learning sessions, peer exchange discussions, and strategic planning beyond LNOB.

The exchange of experiences and practical approaches highlighted the growing importance of localization, accessibility, evidence-based advocacy, and strengthening the leadership role of OPDs within humanitarian action.

DAF was honored to represent Somalia along other sister OPDs and contribute perspectives from the Somali context while learning from global experiences and innovative inclusive humanitarian practices from fellow participants and partners.

We extend our appreciation to all organizers, facilitators, partners, and participating OPDs for their commitment to advancing inclusive humanitarian coordination where truly no one is left behind.

Together, we continue to empower, include, and transform lives through inclusion.

Today’s LNOB Phase 4 workshop sessions focused on reviewing Key Informant Interview (KII) findings and strengthening disability-inclusive humanitarian coordination across participating countries in East, Central and West Africa.

The presentations highlighted important progress made through the “Leave No One Behind” initiative in advancing the meaningful participation of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) within humanitarian coordination mechanisms. Discussions explored how disability inclusion practices are progressing within humanitarian coordination systems and how OPDs are gaining greater confidence and improved capacities to engage in humanitarian action.

The workshop also examined findings from East, Central and West Africa on coordination participation, inclusion, and progress against LNOB indicators related to OPD engagement and inclusive coordination. Participants reflected on existing barriers affecting meaningful participation, including accessibility challenges, communication gaps, stigma, and limited resources, while also discussing practical recommendations for stronger inclusion and localization.

Another important focus of the sessions was the planning for Result 1 finalization, tools uptake, scaling, and localization strategies to ensure sustainability and stronger country-level ownership. The discussions emphasized the need for accessible and inclusive coordination mechanisms, stronger partnerships between OPDs and humanitarian actors, sustainable capacity strengthening, and data-driven advocacy to ensure no one is left behind.

Participants acknowledged that OPDs are increasingly being recognized as important humanitarian actors and partners, contributing meaningfully to coordination meetings, advocacy efforts, capacity building, and inclusive programming.

Disability Aid Foundation - DAF is proud to represent Somalia with other sister OPDs from Somalia and OPDs from Uganda, Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and South Sudan in these important regional discussions and remains committed to advocating for inclusive humanitarian systems where persons with disabilities actively participate in decision-making and humanitarian response.

Together, we move closer toward a more accessible, inclusive, and equitable humanitarian future for all.

At Disability Aid Foundation - DAF, we strongly believe that sustainable development can only be achieved when everyone has a seat at the table including persons with disabilities.

Across Somalia, many community decisions are traditionally made through dialogue and consultation. However, persons with disabilities are often left out of these important discussions, despite being among those most affected by social, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

Through our advocacy and community engagement initiatives, DAF continues to promote meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in local decision-making processes. When communities come together elders, women, youth, and persons with disabilities solutions become more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

Inclusion is not charity. It is a right, a responsibility, and a pathway to stronger communities.

Let us continue working together to ensure that no voice is unheard and no one is left behind.
