(English below)
dependency (การพึ่งพา), vulnerability (ความเปราะบาง),

When You Develop Feelings for Your Psychologist
(English below)
Developing romantic feelings can happen when we meet someone who listens, understands, and stays with us through vulnerable moments.
Sometimes, those feelings may grow beyond the trust and attachment we develop toward someone who supports us.
The feelings themselves are not the problem. What matters is how the relationship is managed.
So, what should a client do when they develop romantic feelings toward their psychologist or psychotherapist?
1. Explore your feelings first
Do you genuinely like this person, or are you becoming attached to the experience of being understood, accepted, and having a safe space to be yourself?
There is no need to rush to an answer. But it is important to recognise that these feelings may affect what is happening within the therapeutic process.
2. Whether to tell your psychologist is the client’s choice
Talking about these feelings may be helpful if the client feels safe and comfortable enough to do so.
But it is not something the client has to do.
The psychologist’s responsibility is to respond professionally, maintain appropriate boundaries, and seek consultation or supervision when necessary.
3. What should not happen is a dual or multiple relationship
For example, developing a romantic relationship with your psychologist while you are still their client.
Holding both roles at the same time can affect objectivity, boundaries, power dynamics, and the client’s best interests within the therapeutic process.
Professional ethics therefore emphasise maintaining clear boundaries between the professional relationship and personal relationships.
What if therapy has already ended?
The answer is not simply “it is fine once therapy ends” or “it is never allowed.”
Professional standards vary across organisations such as the APA, ACA, and BACP. However, they share concerns around power, dependency, vulnerability, exploitation, and the impact of the previous therapeutic relationship.
For example, the APA prohibits sexual relationships with former clients for at least 2 years after therapy ends, and even after two years, such relationships are only considered under highly exceptional circumstances.
The ACA sets a 5-year prohibition on romantic or sexual relationships with former clients.
BACP does not set a fixed time period, but requires careful consideration of time, power, vulnerability, and the impact of the previous professional relationship.
Therefore, if a psychologist enters into a romantic relationship with a client while the professional relationship is still ongoing, this is not simply a matter of whether the feelings are mutual.
It is an ethical violation and a breach of professional boundaries, which may lead to an ethics review and have implications for the professional’s standing.
And if the psychologist is the one expressing or encouraging romantic feelings, the client should not be expected to take responsibility for maintaining that professional boundary.
Having these feelings is not wrong.
What matters most is how the relationship is handled—with professional responsibility and care.
