HIPEC Surgery at BNH Hospital
Advanced Treatment for Selected Abdominal Cancers
At BNH Hospital, we offer Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), an advanced cancer treatment that combines cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with heated chemotherapy to treat cancers that have spread within the abdominal cavity. This specialized procedure is available for carefully selected patients and is performed by our experienced multidisciplinary oncology team.
What is HIPEC?
Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), often referred to as "heated chemotherapy", is administered immediately after the surgical removal of visible tumors from the abdominal cavity. During the procedure, a heated chemotherapy solution (approximately 41–43°C) is circulated throughout the abdomen for 60–90 minutes to destroy any remaining microscopic cancer cells that cannot be seen during surgery.
By delivering chemotherapy directly to the affected area, HIPEC allows a higher concentration of anti-cancer medication to reach the tumor while reducing exposure to the rest of the body. This approach may improve treatment effectiveness and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in appropriately selected patients.
Who May Benefit from HIPEC?
HIPEC may be recommended for patients with selected cancers that have spread to the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum), including:
Advanced or recurrent ovarian cancer
Colorectal cancer with peritoneal metastasis
Appendiceal cancer (including pseudomyxoma peritonei)
Selected gastric (stomach) cancers
Peritoneal mesothelioma
Other carefully selected abdominal cancers, based on specialist evaluation
Not every patient is suitable for HIPEC. Our surgical oncology team will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including imaging studies, pathology reports, and overall health evaluation, to determine whether this treatment is the most appropriate option.
