From Kamphaeng Phet to the global dengue conversation! 🇹🇭🌏

On September 15–17, 2026, our Thai delegation joined the 4th Dengue Endgame Summit in Saranac Lake, New York. Co-hosted by the Trudeau Institute and SUNY Upstate Global Health Institute, the summit brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to discuss advances in vaccines, treatments, and mosquito control, alongside challenges posed by climate change, urban growth, and international travel and how to put those ideas to work in communities.

Representing Kamphaeng Phet were Dr. Angkana Uppapong, Director of Kamphaeng Phet Hospital; Dr. Watcharaphong Wisansak, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Public Health Office; Rungkarn Hangsuwan of the Virology Research Unit, Kamphaeng Phet; and Mattha Rugkarat, Project Manager of the KPPH–SUNY Upstate Medical University collaboration.

Dr. Peeriya Watakulsin of Thailand’s Department of Disease Control spoke about dengue surveillance and rapid response. Thailand also contributed two posters: Dr. Pitiphon Promduangsi’s work on a Zika outbreak and Mattha Rugkarat’s study of dengue literacy, prevention practices, and vaccine acceptance in Kamphaeng Phet’s long-term family cohorts.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Stephen Thomas and Tina Campagna of SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Dr. Darunee Buddhari for making this opportunity possible, arranging our hospital visit, and taking such good care of us. วันที่ 15–17 กันยายน 2569 ทีมจากประเทศไทยได้เข้าร่วม 4th Dengue Endgame Summit ณ เมืองซาราแนคเลก รัฐนิวยอร์ก การประชุมที่จัดโดย Trudeau Institute และ SUNY Upstate Global Health Institute เพื่อเชื่อมนักวิจัย บุคลากรสาธารณสุข และผู้กำหนดนโยบายจากทั่วโลก มาร่วมแลกเปลี่ยนความก้าวหน้าเรื่องวัคซีน การรักษา และการควบคุมยุงพาหะ ท่ามกลางความท้าทายจากสภาพภูมิอากาศ การขยายตัวของเมือง และการเดินทางระหว่างประเทศ ตลอดจนแนวทางที่นำไปใช้ได้จริงในแต่ละพื้นที่

บนเวทีนี้ นพ.พีริยะ วตะกูลสิน จากกรมควบคุมโรค บรรยายเรื่องการเฝ้าระวังและตอบโต้ไข้เลือดออกของไทย และมีโปสเตอร์จากประเทศไทย 2 เรื่อง ได้แก่ งานเรื่องการระบาดของไวรัสซิกาโดย พญ.ปิติภรณ์ พรมดวงสี และงานเรื่องความรอบรู้ การป้องกัน และการยอมรับวัคซีนไข้เลือดออกในกลุ่มครอบครัวศึกษาระยะยาวจังหวัดกำแพงเพชร โดยมัทธา รุกขะรัตน์

SUNY–KPPH Medical Exchange – First Cohort of 2026 💙

Kamphaeng Phet Hospital was honored to welcome Divine Ogieva, Elizabeth Burke, and Lila Ariste, medical students from SUNY Upstate Medical University, who participated in the Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership from June 8 to July 3, 2026.

During this intensive four-week program, the students experienced multidisciplinary clinical learning across a wide range of specialties, including Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Neurosurgery, Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Otolaryngology, and Pediatrics. They also participated in clinical research and community fieldwork with the Kamphaeng Phet–AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU), gaining valuable insight into infectious diseases, epidemiologic research, and Thailand's healthcare system, which are central learning objectives of the exchange program.

Beyond clinical education, the students embraced Thai culture through authentic local cuisine, traditional Thai medicine and massage, visits to historical and cultural landmarks, and meaningful interactions with healthcare professionals and local communities. These experiences strengthened their understanding of global health, cultural competence, and patient-centered care in diverse healthcare settings.

This exchange program reflects the strong and growing partnership between SUNY Upstate Medical University and Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, fostering international collaboration in medical education, research, and global health.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Angkana Uppapong, Director of Kamphaeng Phet Hospital; Dr. Morakot Mangwititkul, Project Director; Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of the Kamphaeng Phet–AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU); and all physicians, faculty members, researchers, and hospital staff whose dedication and warm hospitality made this program a truly meaningful experience.

โครงการนักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยนแพทย์ SUNY-KPPH รุ่นที่ 1 ประจำปี 2569 💙

โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชรมีความยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ได้ต้อนรับนักศึกษาแพทย์จาก SUNY Upstate Medical University ได้แก่ Divine Ogieva, Elizabeth Burke และ Lila Ariste ที่เข้าร่วมโครงการ Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership ระหว่างวันที่ 8 มิถุนายน – 3 กรกฎาคม 2569

นอกจากการเรียนรู้ทางวิชาการ นักศึกษายังได้สัมผัสวิถีชีวิตและวัฒนธรรมไทย ผ่านการลิ้มลองอาหารไทย การเรียนรู้ศาสตร์การแพทย์แผนไทยและการนวดไทย การเยี่ยมชมสถานที่สำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์และแหล่งท่องเที่ยว ตลอดจนการใช้ชีวิตร่วมกับบุคลากรในโรงพยาบาล ซึ่งช่วยสร้างความเข้าใจด้าน Global Health และการดูแลผู้ป่วยในบริบทที่แตกต่างได้อย่างลึกซึ้ง

โครงการนี้ดำเนินงานภายใต้ความร่วมมืออันเข้มแข็งระหว่าง SUNY Upstate Medical University และ โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร เพื่อส่งเสริมการแลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ด้านการแพทย์ การวิจัย และการพัฒนาศักยภาพบุคลากรทางการแพทย์ในระดับนานาชาติ

The 4th Annual Dengue Endgame Summit, hosted by the Upstate Global Health Institute at SUNY Upstate Medical University in collaboration with the Trudeau Institute, will take place:

Kamphaeng Phet Hospital x SUNY Upstate Medical University

March 25, 2026 – Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, led by Dr. Angkana Uppapong, welcomed Dr. Stephen Thomas (SUNY Distinguished Professor and Director, Global Health Institute, SUNY Upstate Medical University, USA) to strengthen collaboration in medical education and research.

The meeting focused on advancing the Joint Medical Education and Research Program, promoting academic exchange, capacity building, and international research collaboration.

Participants also reviewed program progress and set strategic directions for the coming year. Dr. Thomas highlighted Kamphaeng Phet’s global reputation in tropical infectious disease research—especially dengue—as a strong foundation for future collaboration and community-based research initiatives.

SUNY-KPPH Medical Exchange – Third Cohort of 2025 💙 Kamphaeng Phet Hospital is pleased to welcome Ms. Estee Wu, a third-year medical student from SUNY Upstate Medical University, who joined the Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership from October 27th to November 14th, 2025.

During her 3-week program, Estee gained rich clinical and research exposure across Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Pediatrics, PICU, Pulmonology, and KAVRU fieldwork and laboratory activities.

This program continues the strong collaboration between SUNY Upstate Medical University and Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Angkana Uppapong, Hospital Director and to Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) for their coordination, support, and dedication, as well as to all clinical departments and staff who contributed to this warm and meaningful exchange.

Upstate Medical University medical students completed their exchange at Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, Thailand, where they conducted studies and presented their findings.

Group 1 (May 24th - June 21st, 2025): Eric Choi and Bhumika Devkota observed research in the LKFCS project. They presented "Dengue Disease and Vaccine Literacy Assessment in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand; A Preliminary Analysis," based on initial interviews. This work assessed community dengue and vaccine knowledge, highlighting misconceptions and the need for enhanced health literacy.

Group 2 (June 23rd - July 18th, 2025): Ruchika Kilaparty and Maya Lautenberg presented "Thailand’s Health Care Experience: A Multidisciplinary Approach." Their poster explored Thailand's success in achieving equitable healthcare, particularly in rural areas, through strategies like Primary Care Clusters (PCCs) and community health volunteers.

These insightful findings were also presented at the Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit, August 12-14, 2025, in Syracuse, New York!

นักศึกษาแพทย์จาก Upstate Medical University เสร็จสิ้นโครงการแลกเปลี่ยน ณ โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร ประเทศไทย โดยได้ทำการศึกษาและนำเสนอผลงาน ดังนี้

รุ่นที่ 1 (24 พฤษภาคม - 21 มิถุนายน 2568): Eric Choi และ Bhumika Devkota ร่วมสังเกตการณ์งานวิจัยในโครงการ LKFCS และนำเสนอโปสเตอร์ "Dengue Disease and Vaccine Literacy Assessment in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand; A Preliminary Analysis" จากการสัมภาษณ์เบื้องต้น งานนี้ประเมินความรู้ด้านไข้เลือดออกและวัคซีนของชุมชน ชี้ให้เห็นถึงความเข้าใจผิดและความจำเป็นในการเสริมสร้างความรอบรู้ด้านสุขภาพ

Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit: A Global Platform for Health Advancement 🎯

From August 12-14, 2025, experts from around the world gathered in Syracuse, New York, for the Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit. The Thai delegation was led by Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) and a member of the summit's Organizing Committee. She was joined by Dr. Soontorn Pinpaiboon and Dr. Isarapong Duangmee from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

Both doctors shared their positive impressions from the event. Dr. Isarapong Duangmee was particularly impressed by the "World Priority" level of discussion on dengue, focusing on innovative thought processes and care systems with the goal of reducing infection rates to near zero. He also gained valuable experience during a hospital visit at Upstate Medical University, learning about patient management from pre-operative to post-operative care in the U.S. Dr. Isarapong noted, "I was able to meet with expert physicians and exchange knowledge. It was a truly impressive and enriching experience."

Dr. Soontorn Pinpaiboon highlighted that the summit provided not only academic knowledge but also an opportunity to exchange experiences with international physicians. During his hospital visit, he observed rounds in the Nephrology, ICU, and General Medicine wards, which he described as an invaluable experience for learning about patient care and management. He emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences to collectively work towards a dengue-free world.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Stephen Thomas, MD, and Tina Campagna, MPH, from SUNY Upstate Medical University, as well as Dr. Darunee Buddhari, for their support and for providing this wonderful opportunity. They also facilitated our hospital visit and took great care of us throughout our trip.

We are proud that our medical professionals from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital were able to represent Thailand on a global stage and bring back valuable knowledge to apply in our work here.

การประชุมครั้งนี้จัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 12-14 สิงหาคม 2568 ณ เมืองซีราคิวส์ รัฐนิวยอร์ก สหรัฐอเมริกา เป็นการรวมตัวของผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากทั่วโลกเพื่อหาแนวทางยุติปัญหาโรคไข้เลือดออก โดยปีนี้ นพ.สุนทร ปิ่นไพบูลย์ และ นพ.อิสรพงศ์ ดวงมี ตัวแทนจากโรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร ได้เป็นหนึ่งในผู้เข้าร่วมสำคัญจากประเทศไทย ซึ่งในการเดินทางครั้งนี้ มี แพทย์หญิงดรุณี พุทธารี หัวหน้าหน่วย The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในคณะกรรมการจัดงาน (Summit Organizing Committee) ร่วมเดินทางไปด้วย

ทั้งสองท่านได้สรุปความประทับใจและประสบการณ์ที่ได้รับจากการประชุมครั้งนี้

นพ.อิสรพงศ์ ดวงมี กล่าวว่า "ได้รับประสบการณ์ระดับ 'World Priority' ของโรคไข้เลือดออก ได้เรียนรู้ระบบวิธีคิด การดูแล และเป้าหมายการทำให้การติดเชื้อเข้าใกล้ศูนย์ รวมถึงการไปดูงานตามแผนกต่างๆ ของโรงพยาบาล Upstate Medical University ทำให้ได้เรียนรู้ระบบการบริหารจัดการ การดูแลผู้ป่วยในสหรัฐอเมริกา ตั้งแต่ก่อนผ่าตัด ขณะผ่าตัด และหลังผ่าตัด นอกจากนี้ยังได้รู้จักและแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้กับแพทย์ผู้เชี่ยวชาญมากมาย โดยรวมแล้วประทับใจมากๆ ครับ"

ส่วน นพ.สุนทร ปิ่นไพบูลย์ ได้กล่าวถึงความประทับใจที่คล้ายคลึงกัน โดยเน้นว่าการประชุมครั้งนี้ไม่เพียงแต่ให้ความรู้เชิงวิชาการ แต่ยังเปิดโอกาสให้ได้แลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์กับแพทย์จากนานาชาติ นอกจากนี้ ยังได้เข้าเยี่ยมชมโรงพยาบาล และได้ดูงานการทำ round ในแผนก Nephro, ICU และ General Medicine ซึ่งเป็นประสบการณ์ที่มีค่าอย่างยิ่งในการเรียนรู้การดูแลและบริหารจัดการผู้ป่วย คุณหมอเน้นย้ำถึงความสำคัญของการแบ่งปันความรู้และประสบการณ์เพื่อทำงานร่วมกันในการยุติปัญหาโรคไข้เลือดออกให้สำเร็จ

🇺🇸 SUNY-KPPH Medical Exchange – Second Cohort of 2025:
A Journey of Learning and Global Connections 💙

We are thrilled to warmly welcome the second cohort of 2025 from SUNY Upstate Medical University — Ms. Ruchika Kilaparty and Ms. Maya Lautenberg — who participated in the Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership at Kamphaeng Phet Hospital from June 23rd to July 18th, 2025.

Throughout this immersive 4-week program, the students experienced a unique blend of multidisciplinary clinical care observation, an insightful exploration of Thailand’s healthcare system, intensive fieldwork, community visits, and vibrant cultural activities that enriched their understanding and appreciation of global health.

The project was led by Dr. Stephen Thomas, MD, and Ms. Tina Campagna from SUNY Upstate Medical University, with strong support from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital under the leadership of Director Dr. Angkana Uppapong, Project Director Dr. Chinanat Phuangsaichai, Deputy Project Director Dr. Soontorn Pinpiboon, and the dedicated coordination by Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of the Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU), alongside all hospital staff.

🇹🇭 โครงการนักศึกษาแลกเปลี่ยนแพทย์ SUNY-KPPH รุ่นที่ 2 ประจำปี 2568 💙
ขอต้อนรับนักศึกษาแพทย์รุ่นที่ 2 ประจำปี 2025 จาก SUNY Upstate Medical University — Ms. Ruchika Kilaparty and Ms. Maya Lautenberg — ที่ได้เข้าร่วมโครงการ Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership ณ โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร ระหว่างวันที่ 23 มิถุนายน ถึง 18 กรกฎาคม 2568

ตลอด 4 สัปดาห์ นักศึกษาแพทย์ทั้งสองได้สัมผัสประสบการณ์หลากหลาย ตั้งแต่การสังเกตการณ์ในแผนกต่างๆ จองโรงพยาบาล ไปจนถึงการสำรวจระบบสาธารณสุขของประเทศไทยอย่างลึกซึ้ง รวมทั้งทำภาคสนาม เยี่ยมชุมชน และมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมทางวัฒนธรรมที่หลากหลายและมีชีวิตชีวา
