🦟 4th Dengue Endgame Summit – A Global Effort to End Dengue

The 4th Annual Dengue Endgame Summit, hosted by the Upstate Global Health Institute at SUNY Upstate Medical University in collaboration with the Trudeau Institute, will take place:

This international platform brings together global experts to share the latest advances in dengue prevention and control — including vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, vector biology, and public health strategies — all aiming toward a sustainable “Dengue Endgame.”

Kamphaeng Phet Hospital x SUNY Upstate Medical University

March 25, 2026 – Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, led by Dr. Angkana Uppapong, welcomed Dr. Stephen Thomas (SUNY Distinguished Professor and Director, Global Health Institute, SUNY Upstate Medical University, USA) to strengthen collaboration in medical education and research.

The meeting focused on advancing the Joint Medical Education and Research Program, promoting academic exchange, capacity building, and international research collaboration.

Participants also reviewed program progress and set strategic directions for the coming year. Dr. Thomas highlighted Kamphaeng Phet’s global reputation in tropical infectious disease research—especially dengue—as a strong foundation for future collaboration and community-based research initiatives.

ที่ประชุมได้นำเสนอผลงานความก้าวหน้าของโครงการฯที่ผ่านมา และวางแผนยุทธศาสตร์สำหรับการดำเนินงานในปีต่อไป เพื่อพัฒนาบุคลากรและองค์ความรู้ ระหว่างโรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร และ SUNY Upstate Medical University

Dr. Stephen Thomas ได้กล่าวถึงความสำคัญของความร่วมมือทางด้านการวิจัยที่สำคัญและยาวนานของจังหวัดกำแพงเพชร ที่เป็นที่รู้จักไปทั่วโลกเกี่ยวกับโรคติดเชื้อเขตร้อน โดยเฉพาะไข้เลือดออก นำไปสู่การพัฒนาต่อยอดทางการแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ทางวิชาการระหว่างสถาบันและ โครงการวิจัยเพื่อชุมชนของจังหวัดกำแพงเพชรต่อไป

SUNY-KPPH Medical Exchange – Third Cohort of 2025 💙 Kamphaeng Phet Hospital is pleased to welcome Ms. Estee Wu, a third-year medical student from SUNY Upstate Medical University, who joined the Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership from October 27th to November 14th, 2025.

During her 3-week program, Estee gained rich clinical and research exposure across Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Pediatrics, PICU, Pulmonology, and KAVRU fieldwork and laboratory activities.

This program continues the strong collaboration between SUNY Upstate Medical University and Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Angkana Uppapong, Hospital Director and to Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) for their coordination, support, and dedication, as well as to all clinical departments and staff who contributed to this warm and meaningful exchange.

Upstate Medical University medical students completed their exchange at Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, Thailand, where they conducted studies and presented their findings.

Group 1 (May 24th - June 21st, 2025): Eric Choi and Bhumika Devkota observed research in the LKFCS project. They presented "Dengue Disease and Vaccine Literacy Assessment in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand; A Preliminary Analysis," based on initial interviews. This work assessed community dengue and vaccine knowledge, highlighting misconceptions and the need for enhanced health literacy.

Group 2 (June 23rd - July 18th, 2025): Ruchika Kilaparty and Maya Lautenberg presented "Thailand’s Health Care Experience: A Multidisciplinary Approach." Their poster explored Thailand's success in achieving equitable healthcare, particularly in rural areas, through strategies like Primary Care Clusters (PCCs) and community health volunteers.

These insightful findings were also presented at the Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit, August 12-14, 2025, in Syracuse, New York!

นักศึกษาแพทย์จาก Upstate Medical University เสร็จสิ้นโครงการแลกเปลี่ยน ณ โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร ประเทศไทย โดยได้ทำการศึกษาและนำเสนอผลงาน ดังนี้

รุ่นที่ 1 (24 พฤษภาคม - 21 มิถุนายน 2568): Eric Choi และ Bhumika Devkota ร่วมสังเกตการณ์งานวิจัยในโครงการ LKFCS และนำเสนอโปสเตอร์ "Dengue Disease and Vaccine Literacy Assessment in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand; A Preliminary Analysis" จากการสัมภาษณ์เบื้องต้น งานนี้ประเมินความรู้ด้านไข้เลือดออกและวัคซีนของชุมชน ชี้ให้เห็นถึงความเข้าใจผิดและความจำเป็นในการเสริมสร้างความรอบรู้ด้านสุขภาพ

Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit: A Global Platform for Health Advancement 🎯

From August 12-14, 2025, experts from around the world gathered in Syracuse, New York, for the Third Annual Dengue Endgame Summit. The Thai delegation was led by Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) and a member of the summit's Organizing Committee. She was joined by Dr. Soontorn Pinpaiboon and Dr. Isarapong Duangmee from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

Both doctors shared their positive impressions from the event. Dr. Isarapong Duangmee was particularly impressed by the "World Priority" level of discussion on dengue, focusing on innovative thought processes and care systems with the goal of reducing infection rates to near zero. He also gained valuable experience during a hospital visit at Upstate Medical University, learning about patient management from pre-operative to post-operative care in the U.S. Dr. Isarapong noted, "I was able to meet with expert physicians and exchange knowledge. It was a truly impressive and enriching experience."

Dr. Soontorn Pinpaiboon highlighted that the summit provided not only academic knowledge but also an opportunity to exchange experiences with international physicians. During his hospital visit, he observed rounds in the Nephrology, ICU, and General Medicine wards, which he described as an invaluable experience for learning about patient care and management. He emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences to collectively work towards a dengue-free world.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Stephen Thomas, MD, and Tina Campagna, MPH, from SUNY Upstate Medical University, as well as Dr. Darunee Buddhari, for their support and for providing this wonderful opportunity. They also facilitated our hospital visit and took great care of us throughout our trip.

We are proud that our medical professionals from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital were able to represent Thailand on a global stage and bring back valuable knowledge to apply in our work here.

ส่วน นพ.สุนทร ปิ่นไพบูลย์ ได้กล่าวถึงความประทับใจที่คล้ายคลึงกัน โดยเน้นว่าการประชุมครั้งนี้ไม่เพียงแต่ให้ความรู้เชิงวิชาการ แต่ยังเปิดโอกาสให้ได้แลกเปลี่ยนประสบการณ์กับแพทย์จากนานาชาติ นอกจากนี้ ยังได้เข้าเยี่ยมชมโรงพยาบาล และได้ดูงานการทำ round ในแผนก Nephro, ICU และ General Medicine ซึ่งเป็นประสบการณ์ที่มีค่าอย่างยิ่งในการเรียนรู้การดูแลและบริหารจัดการผู้ป่วย คุณหมอเน้นย้ำถึงความสำคัญของการแบ่งปันความรู้และประสบการณ์เพื่อทำงานร่วมกันในการยุติปัญหาโรคไข้เลือดออกให้สำเร็จ

A Journey of Learning and Global Connections 💙

We are thrilled to warmly welcome the second cohort of 2025 from SUNY Upstate Medical University — Ms. Ruchika Kilaparty and Ms. Maya Lautenberg — who participated in the Medical Student Clinical and Research Observership at Kamphaeng Phet Hospital from June 23rd to July 18th, 2025.

Throughout this immersive 4-week program, the students experienced a unique blend of multidisciplinary clinical care observation, an insightful exploration of Thailand’s healthcare system, intensive fieldwork, community visits, and vibrant cultural activities that enriched their understanding and appreciation of global health.

ตลอด 4 สัปดาห์ ทั้งสองคนได้เรียนรู้ระบบสุขภาพไทย สังเกตการณ์ทางคลินิกหลากหลายสาขา ร่วมกิจกรรมภาคสนาม ลงพื้นที่เยี่ยมบ้านผู้ป่วย และแลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมอย่างอบอุ่น

From January 27-29, 2025, Dr. Chinanat Puangsaichai, Project Director, and Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of the Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU), warmly welcomed a delegation from Upstate Medical University. The delegation included Dr. Stephen Thomas, MD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology; Dr. Frank Middleton, Professor of Neuroscience and Physiology; and Lisa Ware, RAC Director of Regulatory Affairs. The visit focused on the collaborative Medical Education and Research project between KPPH and SUNY Upstate Medical University, and fostered a positive and collaborative atmosphere among the research teams and staff. 💙

เมื่อวันที่ 27-29 มกราคม 2568 แพทย์หญิงชินานาฏ พวงสายใจ ผู้อำนวยการโครงการ และ แพทย์หญิงดรุณี พุทธารี หัวหน้าหน่วย The Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU) ได้ให้การต้อนรับคณะผู้แทนจาก Upstate Medical University อย่างอบอุ่น โดยมี Dr. Stephen Thomas, MD ศาสตราจารย์ด้านจุลชีววิทยาและภูมิคุ้มกันวิทยา, Dr. Frank Middleton ศาสตราจารย์ด้านประสาทวิทยาศาสตร์และสรีรวิทยา และ Lisa Ware ผู้อำนวยการด้านกิจการกำกับดูแล RAC เข้าร่วมการเยือนในครั้งนี้ การเยือนครั้งนี้มุ่งเน้นไปที่โครงการร่วมทางแพทยศาสตร์ศึกษาและการวิจัย ระหว่าง โรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชรและมหาวิทยาลัยแพทย์ศาสตร์แห่งรัฐนิวยอร์ค ส่งเสริมบรรยากาศเชิงบวกและความร่วมมือระหว่างทีมวิจัยและบุคลากร 💙

Thai Representatives Attend the 73rd Annual Meeting of American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene: ASTMH 2024
Led by Dr. Darunee Buddhari, Head of the Kamphaeng Phet-AFRIMS Virology Research Unit (KAVRU), and Dr. Soontorn Pinpiboon from Kamphaeng Phet Hospital, Thai representatives participated in the ASTMH 2024 Annual Meeting held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, from November 13th to 17th.

The meeting brought together over 4,000 attendees from more than 100 countries to share insights on a wide range of topics, from basic science to program operations. Special sessions focused on Marburg virus in Rwanda/pandemic response and avian influenza H5N1. The exhibit hall featured organizations supporting tropical medicine.

ตัวแทนจากประเทศไทยเข้าร่วมการประชุมประจำปีครั้งที่ 73 ของสมาคมเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อนและอนามัยแห่งอเมริกา: การประชุมประจำปีของ ASTMH ปี พ.ศ.2567 นำโดยดรุณี พุทธารี, หัวหน้าหน่วยวิจัยไวรัสของ KAVRU และ ดร.สุนทร ปิ่นไพบูลย์ จากโรงพยาบาลกำแพงเพชร ตัวแทนจากประเทศไทยได้เข้าร่วมการประชุมประจำปีของสมาคมเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อนและอนามัยแห่งอเมริกา (ASTMH) ประจำปีพ.ศ.2567 ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่ศูนย์การประชุม Ernest N.Morial ในเมืองนิวออร์ลีนส์ รัฐลุยเซียนา สหรัฐอเมริกา ตั้งแต่วันที่13 ถึง17 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2567

การประชุมครั้งนี้รวบรวมผู้เข้าร่วมกว่า 4,000 คน จากมากกว่า 100 ประเทศทั่วโลก เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ในหัวข้อต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ระดับวิทยาศาสตร์พื้นฐานไปจนถึงการดำเนินโครงการ มีการจัดสัมมนาพิเศษเกี่ยวกับไวรัสมาร์บวร์กในรวันดา/การตอบสนองต่อโรคระบาดใหญ่ และไข้หวัดนก H5N1 มีองค์กรและบริษัทที่สนับสนุนเวชศาสตร์เขตร้อนมาแสดงผลงาน
