Hair Loss Treatment
Hair loss treatment can also use medicine and special medical technique.
Medical Treatment for Hair Loss
The following two treatments have been clinically proven and approved by FDA to effectively treat androgenetic alopecia. Those are finasteride tablet and minoxidil solution.
Finasteride
Finasteride is the generic name for the brand name drugs Proscar 5 mg and Propecia 1 mg. Finasteride is not recommended for women. The drug inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, thereby inhibiting the production of prostate-harming, follicle killing DHT. It helps both preventing hair loss and triggering regrowth. Recommended dose is 1 mg daily for 6 months until the patients will see the result. However if the patients stop using it, the hair loss will come back again within 12 months. The report showed that taking finasteride 1 mg daily for 5 years, patients are able to see effects from the medicine in triggering regrowth. For side effects, men may experience transient sexual side effects including erectile and libido difficulties.
Minoxidil (Rogaine)
Minoxidil was first used in tablet form as a medicine to treat high blood pressure. Further research showed that applying a solution of minoxidil directly to the scalp could also stimulate hair growth.
The research showed that applying 1ml of 5% concentration of minoxidil twice daily for 48 weeks is more effective than using 2% concentration of minoxidil. So it is recommended that patients clean and dry their scalp before apply 1ml 5% concentration of minoxidil twice a day. The result will be noticed after 6 months of medication and patients may continue using it to keep the result. Stop using Minoxidil, the hair loss to come back in 4-6 months. Minoxidil in Thailand can be found in form of solution; drop and spray. Applying minoxidil may have side effect such as skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or face hair growth etc.
As mentioned that minoxidil can be found in form of tablet as it is a medicine to treat high blood pressure. Taking tablet is not recommended to stimulate hair growth. Using minoxidil should be under the supervision of the doctor to avoid unwanted effects.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE or follicular unit extraction, is a minimally invasive method used to harvest and transplant hair. The treatment removes individual follicular units directly from the patient's donor site, which are then replanted into the scalp. Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUT)
Good thing about FUT is that it allows a maximum of 3,500 grafts harvested and transplanted in just one hair transplant session depending on patient’s scalp condition though. The graft extraction process involved in FUT is doing under microscope which reduces follicular graft transection, resulting in less hair graft damage and high rate survivability. When compared to FUE, FUT is faster and less expensive. However, FUT hair transplantation will create a long strip scar and involves more people in a surgery including the surgeon and team of hair transplant specialists, about 6-8 people on average per patient in a session.
