Confession: Me, someone who lives on the deeper side of life, has been doing my favorite movement on autopilot for YEARS without fully understanding its deeper, traditional meaning 🙃
How is that possible?
Let’s dive into it.
Traditionally, classical Hatha sun salutations were practiced to invoke the presence of the Lord Sun 🌞
The sun is the source of all energy.
The sun is the soul of all energy.
By practicing sun salutations, we are asking that divine light to illuminate our being - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually
In the old lineages, this was done at sunrise, facing East, as an offering...
A way of saying:
I see the source of life, and I recognize that same source moving through me, and energizing all parts of me ✨
And when we fold forward in this sequence? That’s actually an act of surrender 🙇
Surrendering to the source of life itself
Physically speaking, it is literally my favorite way to warm up my body and bring movement to all the muscles and joints before diving into more challenging postures
But damn, I’m obsessed with the traditional perspective of these movements 💛
Here’s the best part:
Each posture has its own mantra too (perfectly synced up with the audio here actually)
Together they honor 12 different names and attributes of the Lord Sun, which is exactly what turns this whole sequence into a spiritual practice of gratitude and awakening the life force within ⚡️
How cool is that?
Love,
Sana
P.S I’m actually practicing a variation here, with the arms lifted in Ardha Chandrasana (aka half moon posture). Classically, the hands stay on either side of the front heel in a posture called Ashwa Sanchalanasana (aka horse riding posture aka low lunge) 🫶
