When their children’s symptoms subside or they go a while without having a seizure, parents may think, “They’re cured now; they don’t need medication anymore.” While this is a very understandable concern and hope, stopping medication on one’s own can be risky for children.
Especially in children receiving treatment for epilepsy, irregular use of medication, missing doses, or abruptly stopping treatment can increase the risk of seizures. This is because some medications are used not only to suppress symptoms but also to regulate the brain’s electrical activity.
When the medication seems to be working well, this may indicate that the treatment is effective; however, it does not mean the treatment is over. Decisions regarding when to reduce the medication, how to adjust the dose, or whether to stop it entirely should be based on the child’s diagnosis, seizure status, EEG findings, and clinical follow-up.
The process is different for every child. For this reason, medication treatment in children must always be continued under a doctor’s supervision; decisions to stop medication, reduce the dose, or change the medication should not be made by the family alone. 🧠💊
