Thank you to the Bon Air Police Youth Club for having me for their JAVA activities πŸŽ‰

I love when nutrition is added to the curriculum 😍

This was a group of youths ranging from 6 to 19 years of age, so I incorporated activities that would appeal to all:

🌱Go, Grow & Glow foods
πŸƒπŸΎβ€β™€οΈ Food relay
🍭 Sugar shock

Needless to say, this nutrition session wasn't a lecture (because children don't appreciate that)

It was active, practical, culturally relevant and FUN

Special thanks to WPC Robinson & Team for the opportunity to invest in the health of our youth πŸ’›

Stewed beef...but make it balanced🀌🏾πŸ₯©

The same dish, plated two ways to show that healthy eating isn't about choosing the "perfect" carbohydrateβ€”it's about building a balanced plate that works for you

πŸ₯© Plate 1:
✨ Sweet potato + plantain, stewed beef with red beans, thinly sliced pak choy, sweet peppers & tomatoes πŸ₯¬

πŸ₯© Plate 2:
✨ Parboiled rice, stewed beef with red beans, thinly sliced pak choy, sweet peppers & tomatoes πŸ₯¬πŸ…πŸ«‘

Both plates provide:
✨ A source of carbohydrates for energy

✨ Protein to support fullness and muscle health

✨ Plenty of colourful vegetables for fibre, vitamins, minerals, and volume

Remember this - there isn't ONE way to eat "healthy" 🀏🏾

Sustainable nutrition is about learning how to build balanced meals using the foods that fit your culture, preferences, lifestyle, AND budget

Some days that might look like sweet potato and plantain. Other days, it might be parboiled rice. Both can absolutely have a place on your plate

That's the heart of The Cultural Plate Method πŸ’›

Throwback to 10 years ago during my nutrition practicum at the St. George's general hospital in Grenada 😍😍

My journey towards becoming a dietitian included practicums in Trinidad πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή, Grenada πŸ‡¬πŸ‡© & Barbados πŸ‡§πŸ‡§ before I completed my dietetic internship in Baltimore πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

I love this memory 🌱

6 years ago today - July 15th 2020 - I passed my U.S. board exam & officially became a dietitian πŸŽ‰
..during the pandemic lockdown...

It was one of the most uncertain periods of my life - raising a toddler while finishing my masters, dietetic internship & studying for my board exam...while isolated from family

All I can say is... but, God πŸ™πŸΎ

And forever love for Jess & Madi for risking it all to babysit Ash so that I can sit my exam πŸ₯Ή

Looking back, I realized that I wasn't just being prepared to pass an exam, but to step into my purpose πŸŽ“

One month later, The Cultural Dietitian was born - a name I believe was a divine gift πŸŒ±πŸ’›

What began as a simple blog has grown into a private practice with one mission:

Helping Caribbean people improve their health without giving up the foods and culture they love

Consultations| Group programs | Retreats | Freelance writing | Recipe development| Corporate wellness & more. I'm grateful 🌱

To every client, corporate partner, student, follower, family member, and friend who has supported this journey -- thank you πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

And if you're currently in a season where life feels uncertain, I hope this reminds you that sometimes the hardest chapters become the foundation for the work you're eventually called to do

Cheers to 6 years πŸ₯‚

As a Caribbean person, you can absolutely include quinoa in your diet if you choose toβ€”there’s no judgement here

I, personally love quinoa bowls 🀌🏾

However, it is important to understand that the popular foreign foods like quinoa don’t necessarily out-perform our Caribbean favourites, like rice with peas/beans 🫘 πŸ«›

You don’t need expensive, foreign foods to eat healthyβ€”what we have in our β€œbackyards” are more than enough

πŸ‘‰πŸΎWhat are your thoughts? Are you a fan of quinoa, or na?

Not new to this. True to this. πŸ€πŸΎπŸ’›

As a Registered Dietitian over 5 years, I've had the honour of supporting men & women as they work to lower blood sugar, blood pressure & cholesterol levels, manage chronic conditions like PMOS & IBS, support kidney & thyroid health & rebuild their confidence around food

The testimonials in this reel are from people I've had the privilege of walking alongside & they remind me why I do this work 🌱

It's a privilege that I never take lightly πŸ’›

If you're ready for support, accountability & practical nutrition guidance that honours your culture...

I'd love to invite you to join The Cultural Plate coaching program. We start on July 8th πŸ’›**

5000 strong & growing 🌱 welcome to The Cultural Fam' πŸ’›

I'm Amber, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist & the founder of The Cultural Dietitian πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

My philosophy is simple - you shouldn't have to give up Caribbean foods to be healthy

Foreign isn't automatically better - we have high-quality, nutritious foods too 🍠

That's why you'll find me talking about:
🌱 You don't need kale if you have bhagi
🫘 You don't need quinoa if you have rice & beans
🍲 Building nutritionally balanced Caribbean meals
& the list goes on...

Whether you're managing high blood sugar/ pressure, cholesterol, PMOS, IBS, or simply trying to eat better - my goal is to help you do that strategically with the Caribbean foods you know & love

I want you to feel empowered & lead a high quality of life

So, if you found me & thought, "this is exactly what I've been looking for", then stick around - I have much more to share πŸ’›

And if you're ready to put it into practice, you're invited to join The Cultural Plate 6-week program, starting July 1st - DM or comment "PLATE" to learn more πŸ™ŒπŸΎ

Imagine, in this good, GOOD Caribbean (& the diaspora) people are being told to avoid peas & beans 🫘 πŸ«›

🀨

Foods that have nourished generations of Caribbean people have been labeled as "too high in carbs"

Leaving out the part that they're also rich in:

🫘 Dietary fiber
🫘 Plant protein
🫘 Vitamins & minerals
🫘 Compounds that support gut health

Consistently including peas & beans may help you to lower cholesterol & blood sugar levels, feel full/satiated after meals and support digestive health

Remember Fam' - "high-carb" does not automatically mean unhealthy.

Understand your individual needs & manage your portions accordingly 🀏🏾🀏🏾
