Many people believe va**ng is a “safe” alternative to smoking — but the evidence is becoming clearer: va**ng is not harmless.

🩺 Is a Digital Re**al Exam Still Needed?

Hey, we really want you to live healthy — and we know some men feel uncomfortable about having a re**al exam.

A digital re**al exam (DRE) can still be useful, but it is not always the only or first test used for prostate screening.
Today, screening often begins with a discussion about your risk and a PSA blood test.

In some cases, your doctor may also recommend a DRE as part of a more complete assessment.

At Central Medical Centre, we also offer ultrasound assessment (abdominal or re**al) to help determine the size and health of your prostate, especially if you are having urinary symptoms or concerns about prostate enlargement.

Important to know:
Ultrasound can help assess prostate enlargement and urinary effects, but PSA testing and medical review remain important parts of prostate screening.

🌸 Menopause & Pap Smears: Do You Still Need One?

Menopause does **not** automatically mean you can stop having Pap smears.

Cervical screening after menopause depends on your age, previous Pap smear results, HPV history, and whether you have had any abnormal cervical changes in the past.

✅ Many women still need Pap smears after menopause
✅ Some women can stop after age 65 — but only if they have had enough normal previous screening and no high-risk history
✅ If you have had abnormal Pap smears, HPV, cervical treatment, or are unsure of your past results, you may still need continued screening

⚠️ Don’t ignore symptoms after menopause.

Please get assessed if you have:
• Bleeding after menopause
• Bleeding after s*x
• Pelvic pain
• Unusual discharge
• Persistent discomfort
• Any new gynecologic concern

A Pap smear is a simple test that can detect early cervical cell changes before they become more serious.

🚨 **DON’T RISK BLINDNESS**

👁️ **Eye Screening: Not Just an Eye Exam for Glasses**

Seeing clearly does **not** always mean your eyes are healthy.

If you have **diabetes** or **high blood pressure**, damage can happen quietly at the back of the eye before you notice blurry vision.

Diabetes and hypertension can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina and may lead to:

⚠️ Bleeding at the back of the eye
⚠️ Diabetic retinopathy
⚠️ Hypertensive retinopathy
⚠️ Retinal swelling
⚠️ Permanent vision loss if left untreated

📌 **How often should you screen?**

For **diabetes**:
✅ Type 2 diabetes: eye screening is recommended from diagnosis
✅ Type 1 diabetes: screening usually starts about 5 years after diagnosis
✅ Many patients need screening at least once a year
✅ If eye disease is already present, follow-up may need to be more frequent

For **high blood pressure**:
✅ Screening is especially important if your pressure has been high for years, is poorly controlled, or you also have diabetes, kidney disease, headaches, or vision changes
✅ Your eye specialist will guide how often you need follow-up

Your assessment is done by an **eye specialist** who can examine the retina, check for bleeds or blood vessel damage, and guide you on the next step if treatment or follow-up is needed.

🌸 Mammogram: Every 1 or 2 years?

For average-risk adults, mammogram screening usually starts around age 40 — but whether it should be done yearly or every 2 years depends on your age, breast density, personal risk factors, family history, and your doctor’s advice.

🧬 What guides the doctor?

Doctors consider the balance between early detection and avoiding unnecessary callbacks or biopsies.

✅ Yearly mammograms may be advised if you are younger, have dense breasts, have a strong family history, previous breast problems, genetic risk, or symptoms.
✅ Every 2 years may be suitable for some average-risk adult

The best schedule is not one-size-fits-all — it should be personalized.

⚠️ Important to know:
Mammograms are excellent screening tools, but they are not perfect. Some breast cancers may not be seen on a mammogram — especially in dense breasts — and may be picked up on breast ultrasound.

You can be diagnosed with breast cancer with a positive ultrasound and a normal mammogram!

If you feel a lump, notice ni**le discharge, skin changes, breast pain in one area, or any change in your breast, don’t wait for your next routine mammogram. Get assessed.
