Hi there, ladies! We've already spoken at length about the fact that precancerous abnormalities of the cervix are completely treatable and curable, but how do we do this?

There are 3 main ways that this is done: 1) Cryosurgery (freezing the abnormal cells off), 2) Electrocautery (using a small electric charge to burn the cells off), and 3) Laser surgery (using a laser for the same effect).

Outside of this, a doctor may recommend Cone Biopsy (removing a cone-shaped piece of the cervix which includes the abnormal cells) or a Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, fallopian tube, ovaries and the cervix). However, these are considered drastic measures for advanced precancerous stages or for when cancer has already developed!

These treatments have all been proven to be extremely effective in preventing the development of Cervical Cancer, but remember that it all starts with detection through a Pap smear.

Hey Ladies! Last time we spoke about Cervical Cancer, we defined what cancer is. But what does that mean for your health?

Well, the signs and symptoms are similar to most cancers — inflammation, pain, bleeding — but once diagnosed, to regain your health, you now have to consider treatment options.

The three options available are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. They may be used alone or in various combinations depending on the stage that the cancer is in. The best way to know which treatment option is best for you would be to talk to your doctor and discuss them.

However, in the case of Cervical Cancer, because the precancerous stages are detectable and treatable/curable, the old adage, "Prevention is better than cure," holds particularly well. Remember to contact your ObGyn to schedule your as soon as possible.

It's time to take a closer look at the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. This virus is the primary cause of cervical cancer! That means that treating or preventing HPV also helps your cervical health.

With over 100 strains, only about 40 are sexually transmitted and only about 15 are high-risk for cancer. Two in particular - strains 16 and 18 - cause approximately 70% of all cervical cancer!

The good news? There are vaccines available to protect you from 9 strains of the HPV!

As we said earlier, your doctor collects cells from your cervix to test for the changes that occur before they become cancerous, but how do they do that?

There are several precancerous stages that cervical cells go through before becoming cancerous. The great news is that all of these precancerous stages are completely curable, but only if they are detected, which is exactly what the Pap smear does!
