Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) – The Personality Changer !

Most people think dementia always starts with memory loss. But for those with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), memory is often the last thing to go.

FTD is a bit different because it primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain—the parts responsible for our personality, behavior, and language.
What makes FTD unique? It strikes younger: While other dementias often affect those over 65, FTD is the most common form of dementia for people under age 60. Most cases are diagnosed between ages 45 and 64.

Personality over Memory: The first signs are often subtle changes in behavior or personality, such as losing empathy, acting impulsively, or developing unusual food cravings (especially for sweets!).

Language Struggles: Some variants make it difficult to find the right words or understand what others are saying.Because it doesn't look like "typical" dementia, it is frequently misdiagnosed as depression or a psychiatric condition.

Understanding these signs is the first step toward getting the right support.

“What if it's FTD?" Let’s help people recognize the signs that aren't just "forgetting keys."Have you ever heard of FTD before? Share this post to help someone get the right diagnosis sooner.

Thank you—genuinely—to every single one of you who read, shared, commented, and opened up. The conversations this week have been powerful.

Here’s what we explored together:

Dementia doesn’t follow a straight line
Some days look “normal,” others don’t. That’s not improvement or decline—it’s the nature of the disease.

“I want to go home”
Not about a place. About safety, comfort, and familiarity. We talked about shifting from correcting to understanding.

The restless mind at night
Repetition, worry, poor sleep. And how slowing down, not overstimulating, can actually calm things.

Behaviour is communication
Aggression isn’t attitude—it’s unmet need. Pain, fear, confusion… expressed the only way left.

The brain and pain
When the “volume control” is broken, small discomfort can feel overwhelming—and words aren’t always available.

Sundowning / the “witching hour”
Evenings can be the hardest. Not because you’re doing something wrong—but because the brain is tired.

End-stage dementia
The quiet, the slowing down, the emotional weight families carry. One of the hardest journeys—but no one is alone in it.

If there’s one theme this week, it’s this:
👉 It’s not about correcting dementia. It’s about understanding it.

And that’s not easy. It’s exhausting, emotional, and sometimes overwhelming.

But the way you show up matters more than perfection ever will.
Be kind,

Some days, they seem completely fine.
Other days, they are confused, withdrawn, or not themselves at all.

That doesn’t mean they’re “faking it.” It means dementia doesn’t follow a straight line, it changes daily.

One good day doesn’t mean they’re getting better.
One bad day doesn’t mean everything is lost.

It’s unpredictable.
It’s exhausting—for them and for those caring for them.

So before you judge, rush, or correct…
Pause. Be patient. Be kind.

👇 Let’s talk about it
What is ONE thing about dementia you wish more people understood?
