The rainy season is upon us.
Mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue tend to increase during the rainy months in Trinidad and Tobago, simply because standing water gives mosquitoes more places to breed.
Waterborne illnesses also become more common, especially when flooding affects food and water sources. A few consistent habits make a real difference in keeping your household well.
Here's what we recommend:
-Eliminate mosquito breeding grounds around your home by emptying any standing water in containers, gutters, or plant trays
-Use insect repellents and mosquito nets, especially in the early morning and evening
-Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing when outdoors during peak mosquito hours
-Stay dry and use an umbrella as prolonged dampness can contribute to skin and respiratory issues
-Drink filtered or boiled water, particularly if your usual water source may have been affected by flooding
-Do not eat foods that have come into contact with floodwaters
-Maintain proper hygiene and sanitary practices throughout the household
