Healing After a Tooth Extraction

These images show the normal healing process of a tooth extraction socket over time. While every patient heals at a slightly different rate, this sequence illustrates what healthy healing typically looks like.

1. Immediately After Extraction
The extraction site has been cleaned, and sutures (stitches) have been placed to protect the area and help stabilize the blood clot, which is essential for proper healing.

2. Early Healing
The tissues begin to close around the extraction site. The blood clot remains protected beneath the sutures, reducing the risk of infection and supporting new tissue formation.

3. Initial Tissue Repair
As healing progresses, the sutures may dissolve or be removed. Fresh gum tissue begins to grow over the extraction socket, and the opening gradually becomes smaller.

4. Continued Healing
Healthy granulation tissue fills the socket while new bone starts forming beneath the gums. Mild redness is normal during this stage as the body repairs itself.

5. Advanced Healing
The gum tissue continues to mature, and the extraction site becomes noticeably smaller. Most patients experience little to no discomfort at this stage.

6. Healed Extraction Site
The gums have largely closed over the socket, and the area appears smooth and healthy. Although the gums have healed, the underlying bone will continue to remodel over the coming months.

Healing times vary from person to person. Following your dentist's aftercare instructions, maintaining good oral hygiene, and attending follow-up appointments will help ensure a smooth recovery. If you experience severe pain, excessive swelling, persistent bleeding, or signs of infection, contact your dentist promptly.
