🚨 Waiting is not a strategy 🙅‍♀️

One thing I have learnt as a speech therapist: therapy should never feel like work for a child.

If a child wants to crawl under the table, I am not spending the next ten minutes trying to get them back in their chair. I am crawling under there too. Now we are in a cave, a rocket ship, or a secret hideout and language is happening naturally 🚀

If a child wants to get up and dance, let’s dance 💃

If they want to pretend to be a dinosaur, I will be the dinosaur’s best friend 🦕

The goal isn’t to make children fit into therapy.

The goal is to make therapy fit the child‼️

Some of the most meaningful progress I have seen has happened during moments that looked more like play than work.

When children feel connected, understood, and free to be themselves, communication blossoms 🌱

As we celebrate National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, I am reminded that my favorite therapy tool is not a flashcard, a worksheet, or a toy. It is connection. Because when we meet children where they are, they are much more willing to take us where they are capable of going 🫶

What began as fear transformed into curiosity, connection, confidence & communication.

One of the things I love most about working with children with speech delays is finding meaningful moments that motivate them to practice speech in real-life contexts.

When communication has a purpose, children are often willing to attempt sounds, words & phrases that might otherwise feel challenging.

So proud of this little boy's bravery and willingness to try something new ❤️

Speech language pathology (SLP) is not just a profession.

It is a passion fueled by the belief that just because someone might have difficulty communicating, it does not mean they have nothing to say.

However it is done, communication is the key to human interaction.

At Just Kidz Emergency, we’re highlighting the importance of moving beyond awareness to true acceptance.

Our Speech & Language Therapist, Donnella Rodriguez, reminds us that Autism Acceptance is about:
• Deepening our understanding
• Showing respect
• Creating inclusive spaces
• Celebrating individuals for who they are

It’s not about trying to “fix” anyone, it’s about adapting our world to better support and include every child.

Stimming is NOT random… it’s meaningful.

It serves a purpose: to regulate, to express, to communicate 🫶

What may look like “just a behavior” is often a message trying to be heard. If we slow down and listen, we’ll understand.

It’s not something to silence, but something to respect 🙌
