As the South-West Regional Health Authority continued its recognition of World Breastfeeding Month, the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Unit hosted an informative lecture and breastfeeding booth at Level 4 of the San Fernando Teaching Hospital.

Expectant mothers and fathers took part in practical demonstrations on the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding at the Maternal and Child Health Clinic, along with demonstrations on birthing methods used at the hospital.

The session gave parents an opportunity to learn, ask questions and feel more prepared for childbirth, breastfeeding and the arrival of their little ones.

CLU celebrates 20 years in community service

In delivering the keynote address at the Community Liaison Unit’s 20th anniversary ceremony, Mr. Anil Gosine, Chairman of the Board of Directors lauded the outstanding contribution and unmistakable impact of the Unit’s work in positively influencing the health outcomes of citizens. Similar sentiments were echoed by Dr Shevanand Gopeesingh, Chief Executive Officer, who reminded the audience of the importance of building sustainable trust and bridges between clients & caregivers.

The ceremony occurred on August 3rd, 2026 at the San Fernando Teaching Hospital, in the presence of current and former CLU staff. Also in attendance were Mr. Roland Hall, member of the Board of Directors, Dr Robin Sinanan, Director of Health (Ag); Ms Rena Yearwood, Chief Operations Officer (Ag.); Mrs. Lisa Benjamin-Mohanlal, General Manager Nursing, Medical Directors and other members of the management and staff.

Did you know that your body begins preparing to breastfeed before your baby arrives?

Breast milk production can begin during pregnancy, sometimes from as early as 14 weeks. The first milk produced is called colostrum, a concentrated first food specially made for your newborn.

Glaucoma is known as the "silent thief of sight" protect your vision before it's too late.

Glaucoma often develops without pain or noticeable symptoms, but it can permanently damage the optic nerve and lead to irreversible vision loss. Regular eye examinations are the best way to detect glaucoma early and preserve your sight.

If you are over the age of 40, have diabetes, elevated eye pressure, or a family history of glaucoma, routine eye screenings are especially important.

✔️ Schedule regular comprehensive eye examinations.
✔️ Use prescribed eye drops exactly as directed.
✔️ Never stop or adjust your glaucoma medication without consulting your eye doctor.

Early detection can make all the difference. Visit your nearest Health Centre for more information and take a proactive step toward protecting your vision.

As we commemorate Emancipation Day, we honour the courage, resilience and enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom and justice. This day reminds us of the importance of dignity, equality and respect values that continue to guide us in the service we provide to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

May this observance inspire us to celebrate our rich cultural heritage, reflect on the sacrifices of the past, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and compassionate society.
