To the parent worrying at the dinner table tonight…

Some picky eating is a normal part of growing up β€” and much of it eases with patience, time, and gentle, consistent effort. You are likely doing more right than you realise.

But it's also worth knowing when to reach out for extra support. It's a good idea to speak with your doctor if you notice weight loss, signs of nutritional deficiency, choking or vomiting with feeds, or if feeding struggles are really affecting your family's quality of life.

Trust your instincts. Seeking help isn't failing β€” it's one of the most caring things a parent can do.

And you don't have to figure out where that line is alone. That's exactly why we're bringing experts and parents together next month. πŸ’š

Plain pasta. Crackers. Two brands of yogurt. Chicken nuggets β€” but only one shape. Parents anxious about nutrition and healthy weight, worried about how to help their child. I see it so often and I understand how mealtime battles take a toll on the whole family.

A child who eats only a handful of foods isn't being stubborn, and their parent isn't doing anything wrong. There are real reasons behind selective eating β€” sensory, behavioural, and sometimes medical β€” and once you understand which is which for your child, you can actually do something about it.

At Beyond Picky, our in-person feeding workshop, you'll leave knowing:
🍽️ Why your child rejects certain foods β€” the specific reason, not a guess
🍽️ The gentle, step-by-step way to expand their "safe" foods without the battles
🍽️ How to protect their nutrition right now, even with a limited diet
🍽️ What to try at dinner tomorrow night β€” not someday, tomorrow

If mealtimes have worn you down, this workshop is for you. Register using the link below. πŸ’š

A gentle reminder for the dinner table tonight. πŸ½οΈπŸ’š

When a child won't eat, our instinct is to push, to add a little pressure, maybe a consequence. But here's what we know: pressuring children to eat, or punishing them when they don't, can actually make them dislike those foods.

The opposite of what we're hoping for.

So try, as much as you can, not to fuss over a refused meal. If your child ate a good breakfast or lunch, they may simply not be very hungry β€” and that's okay. A calm table, free of battles, is one where eating feels safe.

Less pressure. Less fighting. More trust around food. It feels counterintuitive, but it works. πŸ’š

This is exactly the kind of thing we'll explore at Beyond Picky, our feeding workshop with dietitian Ms. Jessica John.

Next month, I'm bringing together everything I know about feeding as a developmental-behavioural paediatrician with the expertise of registered dietitian, Ms. Jessica John β€” for a workshop devoted entirely to feeding.

β€œBeyond Picky: Understanding and Supporting Your Selective Eater” is a live, in-person session for parents who worry about their child's eating and want real answers β€” not β€œthey’ll eat when they’re hungry”.

Together, we'll explore why autistic children are often selective eaters, what's happening beneath the surface, and practical strategies that genuinely help β€” from food bridges to making mealtimes calmer and more fun.

πŸ“… Friday, July 31 or Saturday, August 1 (same session β€” choose your day)

Here's something that surprises a lot of parents. 🍽️

If your child refuses a new food, it doesn't mean they'll never eat it.

It can take ten or more tastes of a new food before a child's taste buds accept it. Ten! So that vegetable they pushed away last week isn't a closed door β€” it's just early in the process.

The key is to keep gently offering, without pressure, even foods they've refused before. Small amounts. No fuss. Try again in a week or two. Over time, familiarity does the quiet work.

So if you've given up on a food after one or two tries β€” it might be worth another go. Patience really is the strategy. πŸ’š

One of the most common concerns parents of autistic children talk about is feeding. 🍽️

If your autistic child is a super-selective eater and you constantly worry about their nutrition, our next workshop is for you.

At the end of July, I’ll be collaborating with a registered dietitian to talk about challenges with feeding. We'll explore why autistic children are often selective eaters and strategies that actually help.

Because a child who won't eat isn't choosing to be difficult. They need patience, understanding and options. And once you understand that, everything changes.

This live, in-person workshop will be open to a limited number of participants on July 31 and August 1. Paid CAP-C members get access at a discounted rate. More details coming soon! πŸ’š

Calling all parents of picky eaters! πŸ½οΈπŸ’š

I want to hear from you: what is your child's absolute favourite food β€” the one you can always count on?

For some children it's plain pasta. For others, a very specific brand of crackers, or chicken cooked exactly one way. And if the list feels very short in your house β€” you are so not alone.

Share it in the comments. πŸ‘‡ I'm asking for a reason… and there’s something helpful coming your way very soon. πŸ’š
