When someone says something that hurts you, immediately, something happens inside. You feel hurt. Anger follows. Then, a thought appears: “I’m going to hurt you back.”

This is an important moment, because kamma(業) is not only about what our hands finally do. The Buddha placed great importance on cetanā(動機、意圖、意向、意志)—the intention behind our actions.

Very often, the process looks like this:

Something happens → We feel → An intention arises → We act → We repeat → It becomes a habit.

This is why mindfulness is so important. It gives us a little space before the feeling becomes an action.

Someone insults you. The hurt may be real. The anger may also be real. But revenge is not compulsory. We can pause. We can breathe. We can look at the mind and ask: “If I follow this anger, where will it take me?”

🌿 We may not always choose the first feeling that arises. But with awareness, we can choose what we do with it.

This little pause can change a word. A word can change an action. An action can change a habit. And slowly, a different way of living becomes possible.

🌿 The People Around You, are Quietly Shaping the Direction, of Your Life

Spend one hour with some people,

and you return home carrying gossip, comparison, and worry.

Spend a few minutes with others,

and your mind becomes calmer, clearer, and kinder.

So spiritual practice is not only about asking:

“What am I practising?”

We should also ask:

“Who am I regularly be with?”

---

Vow 14 — Countless Śrāvakas

Dharmākara Bodhisattva vowed:

The number of śrāvaka practitioners in Sukhāvatī will be vast and immeasurable.

A śrāvaka is literally “one who hears”—a disciple who hears the Dharma, practises it, and moves toward liberation.

So Sukhāvatī is not only a pure Buddha-land.

It is also an immense Dharma community.

Pure Land is not only a pure place — it is also pure companionship.

---

🪷 What You Stay Close to, Your Mind Gradually Moves Toward

If the people around us constantly encourage

greed, comparison, gossip, and anger,

our minds can gradually move in that direction.

If our companions remind us of

Buddha recollection, morality, compassion, mindfulness, and wisdom,

we more easily remember our spiritual direction.

When one person becomes weak, another person’s faith can strengthen them.

When one becomes lost, another can remind them.

When pride arises, another person’s humility can become a mirror.

A pure environment protects our life. A pure community protects the direction of our mind.

---

🌱 Do Not Only Look for Good Spiritual Friends — Become One

Ask yourself:

Do my words make others calmer or more disturbed?

Does my companionship strengthen mindfulness or carelessness?

When a friend makes a mistake, do I encourage it,

or gently help them see it?

A true spiritual friend does not always tell us what we want to hear.

When we lose our direction,

they compassionately help us return.

Do not only search for good spiritual friends — become one.

Become someone whose presence reminds others of

compassion, goodness, mindfulness, and the Dharma.

---

🙏 For Departed Beings

Dear departed beings:

Do not think that you must walk this journey alone.

Take refuge in the Buddha.
Take refuge in the Dhamma.
Take refuge in the Saṅgha.

Turn toward Amitābha Buddha

and the pure assembly of Sukhāvatī.

Release the thought:

“No one understands me. I am alone.”

Let wholesome aspiration, Buddha recollection, and the Dharma become your support.

You do not have to walk alone — turn toward the Buddha, Dhamma, Saṅgha, Amitābha Buddha, and the noble assembly.

也不抗拒不喜歡的;

Imagine if a mirror kept every face that had ever appeared in front of it. Very soon, it would no longer be able to reflect clearly.

Our mind can be like this too. Someone praises us—we hold on to it. Someone hurts us—we hold on to that too. A beautiful moment passes—we want it back. A painful memory returns—we live through it again and again.

But a mirror does something very different. A beautiful face appears, and the mirror reflects it. An unpleasant face appears, and the mirror reflects that too. When they leave, the mirror lets them go.

This is a beautiful way to understand mindfulness and awareness. When anger arises, simply notice: “Anger is here.” When sadness arises: “Sadness is here.” When joy arises: “Joy is here.”

We do not have to deny what we feel, but we also do not have to turn it into: “This is me.” Instead of saying, “I am an angry person,” perhaps simply notice: “Anger has arisen, and anger will also pass.”

🌿 The mirror does not cling to the beautiful, nor does it fight the unpleasant. It reflects—and lets go.

Actually, we can learn to treat our own mind with the same wisdom. See clearly. Feel fully. Hold lightly. Let go gently.

Amitāyus

---

🌿 Do Not Only Ask How Long You Will Live — Ask How You Will Live the Time That Remains

We often wish:

“May I live longer.”

But the Dharma asks a deeper question:

“If you were given another ten years, how would you live them?”

Ten more years of worry?

Ten more years of fighting?

or ten more years of wisdom, compassion, and helping others?

Amitābha Buddha’s Thirteenth Vow invites us to reconsider what “life” really means.

Vow 13 — Infinite Life

Dharmākara Bodhisattva vowed:

When he becomes a Buddha, his lifespan will be immeasurable, and his compassionate Buddha-activity for the benefit of beings will continue without interruption.

Therefore, Amitābha is also known as:

Amitāyus — the Buddha of Infinite Life

---

🪷 Infinite Life Does Not Mean an Ego That Lives Forever

Buddhism does not teach that there is an eternal, unchanging self that continues forever.

The body arises through causes and conditions.

It ages, becomes sick, changes, and eventually passes away.

But the influence of wisdom, compassion, and wholesome actions can extend far beyond the lifespan of one body.

Śākyamuni Buddha entered parinibbāna long ago.

Yet today,

his Dhamma continues to transform countless lives.

The body has a lifespan. The influence of wisdom and compassion can reach far beyond it.

---

🌱 Life Is Not Only About Length

Someone may live for one hundred years,

yet spend most of life centred only on themselves.

Another person may live fewer years,

yet leave kindness, wisdom, and compassion in many hearts.

So the body asks:

“How long will I live?”

Wisdom asks:

“How will I live the time that remains?”

Did I make someone’s suffering lighter today?

Did I speak words that brought peace?

Did I pass wisdom to the next generation?

Did I use my time for practice, Buddha recollection, goodness, and awakening?

Do not merely add years to life — add Dhamma to your years.

When this body eventually disappears,

what remains is not only our photographs, possessions, and name.

We also leave behind:

the goodness, wisdom, and compassion we gave to this world.

---

🙏 For Departed Beings

Dear departed beings:

The time of this physical life has been completed.

Rejoice in the goodness you have done.
Sincerely repent of harm that may have been caused.
Gladly receive the merit dedicated by family and others.

Do not cling to the life that has already ended.

Turn your mind toward Amitābha Buddha.

The body has completed its time. Let the mind now choose its direction.

Turn toward Infinite Light.
Turn toward Infinite Life.
Turn toward Sukhāvatī.

Yathā agāraṃ ducchannaṃ,
vuṭṭhī samativijjhati;
evaṃ abhāvitaṃ cittaṃ,
rāgo samativijjhati.

Yathā agāraṃ succhannaṃ,
vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati;
evaṃ subhāvitaṃ cittaṃ,
rāgo na samativijjhati.

⸻ 6 Oct. 2026

When heavy rain comes, we usually blame the weather. If water keeps pouring into the house, we should look at the broken roof sooner.

The Buddha used this simple and beautiful image in the Dhammapada:

Yathā agāraṃ ducchannaṃ, vuṭṭhī samativijjhati;
evaṃ abhāvitaṃ cittaṃ, rāgo samativijjhati.

“Just as rain enters a poorly roofed house, desire enters an undeveloped mind.”

And:

Yathā agāraṃ succhannaṃ, vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati;
evaṃ subhāvitaṃ cittaṃ, rāgo na samativijjhati.

“Just as rain cannot enter a well-roofed house, desire cannot overwhelm a well-developed mind.”

This is very practical.

We cannot stop difficult people from appearing.
We cannot stop temptation from appearing.
We cannot control everything we see, hear, or experience.

We cannot stop the rain. But, we can repair the roof.

How?
Through mindfulness, sīla, wise attention, contentment, and meditation.

When the mind is well trained, pleasant things can come without immediately becoming attachment. Unpleasant things can come without immediately becoming anger.

The world may be exactly the same. But the way it enters our heart becomes different.

Practice is not about controlling the weather. It is about taking good care of the house.

🌿 However Long the Darkness Has Lasted, One Lamp Can Change Everything

Imagine a room that has remained dark for a thousand years.

When one lamp is lit,

does the darkness need another thousand years to disappear?

No.

The moment light appears, darkness begins to disappear.

This is the hope within Amitābha Buddha’s Twelfth Vow — Infinite Light.

Vow 12 — Infinite Light

Dharmākara Bodhisattva vowed:

When he becomes a Buddha, his light will be immeasurable and illuminate vast numbers of Buddha-lands.

Therefore, Amitābha is:

The Buddha of Infinite Light.

This light is not only something external.

It also points us toward the Buddha’s boundless wisdom and compassion.

Ordinary light shows us what is around us.

The Buddha’s light helps us see what is true.

We see impermanence.
We see how attachment creates suffering.
We see that hatred cannot finally end hatred.
And we see that—

liberation is possible.

---

🪷 Do Not Let Your Darkest Day Decide Your Whole Life

A person may have made mistakes.

A person may have been lost for many years.

Life may have reached its lowest point.

But this does not mean:

“This is what I must always be.”

Past kamma has consequences; we cannot pretend that nothing happened.

But in this very moment,

we can still choose a new direction.

Your past may explain where you are — but it does not have to decide where you go next.

No being should be permanently defined by their darkest moment.

---

🌱 The Light Is Shining — but We Must Open the Window

Sunlight may fill the whole sky.

But if every window remains closed,

the room stays dark.

The problem is not that the sun refuses to shine.

The window has not yet been opened.

Faith opens a window.
Repentance opens a window.
Mindfulness opens a window.
Buddha recollection opens a window.

Infinite Light is always shining — practice is learning to open the mind to receive it.

Then become a small lamp for someone else.

Bring understanding to confusion.
Forgiveness to hatred.
Companionship to loneliness.
Hope to despair.

Do not only complain about the darkness of the world — light one lamp through your own life.

---

🙏 For Departed Beings

Dear departed beings:

If you feel surrounded by darkness,

do not be afraid.

Do not think:

“I have made too many mistakes. The Buddha will not receive me.”

Whatever has happened in the past,

you can release fear now

and turn your mind toward Amitābha Buddha.

Recollect the Buddha’s name:

Namo Amitābha Buddha.

However long the darkness has lasted — you can turn toward Infinite Light now.

🌿 The Hardest Part of Practice Is Not Starting — It Is Continuing

Many people have begun spiritual practice.

The problem is that we begin many times.

Today we are inspired; tomorrow we become careless.

Today we forgive; tomorrow anger returns.

Today we begin chanting or meditating; a few days later, we stop.

So the important question is not only:

“Have I entered the path?”

It is:

“Can I continue walking?”

---

Vow 11 — Certain Progress to Liberation

Dharmākara Bodhisattva vowed:

Beings born in Sukhāvatī will be firmly established in the right spiritual direction, will not easily fall away from it, and will ultimately progress toward final liberation.

The greatness of Sukhāvatī is not merely that it provides temporary happiness.

More importantly:

The direction toward awakening becomes stable.

---

🪷 Do Not Seek Only One Powerful Spiritual Experience

A beautiful meditation experience will pass.

The inspiration of a ceremony will pass.

Even an extraordinary spiritual experience may appear and disappear.

The real question is:

When the inspiration disappears, will you still continue?

Remember the Buddha in happiness,
and remember the Buddha in difficulty.

Practise when people praise you,
and keep the precepts when nobody is watching.

Practise when you feel something special,
and continue when nothing special happens.

Certainty does not mean that difficulties disappear.

It means that even when difficulties come,

we still know the direction in which we are going.

---

🌱 Do Not Depend Only on Inspiration — Build Stability

Keep some regular time for practice.

Stay close to wise spiritual friends and the Dharma.

When someone corrects you, listen before becoming defensive.

When the mind wanders, return.
When you fall back, begin again.
When you fall down, stand up again.

The path is not completed through one great spiritual moment, but by returning to the right direction again and again.

Faith gives direction.
Practice gives stability.
Wisdom leads toward liberation.

---

🙏 For Departed Beings

Dear departed beings:

If the mind is still confused or wandering,

give it one clear direction:

I take refuge in the Buddha.
I take refuge in the Dhamma.
I take refuge in the Saṅgha.
I aspire for birth in Sukhāvatī.

Do not allow hatred, fear, and attachment to keep the mind wandering.

Remember Amitābha Buddha,

and let the mind remain with this wholesome aspiration.

A wandering mind suffers because it has no direction. A clear aspiration gives the mind somewhere to go.

🌿 Care for the Body — but Do Not Become Imprisoned by It

When we are young, we worry that we are not attractive enough.

As we grow older, we fear wrinkles, illness, and ageing.

We spend so much time caring for the body,

but rarely ask:

“What am I going to use this body for?”

Amitābha Buddha’s Tenth Vow gives us a profound reminder.

Vow 10 — Freedom from Attachment to the Body

Dharmākara Bodhisattva vowed:

Beings born in Sukhāvatī will have bodies, but they will not cling to the body as a permanent “I” or “mine.”

This does not mean hating the body.

It does not mean neglecting our health.

Wisdom means:

Care for the body — without clinging to it.

---

🪷 The Body Is Neither Our Enemy nor Our Permanent Self

We often fall into two extremes.

One is worshipping the body:

“My value depends on how I look.”

The other is hating the body:

“I hate becoming old, sick, or imperfect.”

The Dharma teaches the Middle Way.

This body is neither my permanent self nor my enemy.

It arises temporarily through causes and conditions and the four great elements—earth, water, fire, and air.

It is always changing.

We can care for it,

but we cannot command it:

“Do not age.”
“Do not become sick.”
“Do not die.”

Care for the body — but do not ask the impermanent to become permanent.

---

🌱 Use the Body Well Before Returning It

Since one day this body must return to nature,

use it meaningfully today.

Let your hands give.
Let your feet walk toward those who need help.
Let your mouth speak truth and kindness.
Let your eyes look with compassion.
Let your ears listen patiently.
Let your body bow to the Buddha, recollect Amitābha, and perform wholesome actions.

Do not ask only:

“Does my body look good?”

Also ask:

“Am I using this body to do something truly worthwhile?”

Before returning the body to nature, turn it into a field of merit.

---

🙏 For Departed Beings

Dear departed beings:

Your former body has completed its work for this part of the journey.

There is no need to fear burial or cremation, or to become disturbed when former possessions are moved.

You may gently say:

“Through this body, I lived and learned. Now its work is finished.”

Thank it.

Then release it.

Do not keep looking backward toward the former body.

Turn your mind toward Amitābha Buddha, Infinite Light, and Sukhāvatī.

Care for the body while it serves you. Thank it when its work is finished. Then let it go.

🙏 Namo Amitābha Buddha 🙏
