(Vagus Nerve)

😵 Can’t Stop Your Mind from Racing at Night?
🌙 5 Minutes Before Bed|A Gentle Vagus Nerve Calming Practice
You may be physically exhausted and ready for bed, yet the moment you lie down, your mind just won’t stop racing.
The day’s work, unfinished tasks, tomorrow’s plans, or even emotions that are difficult to put into words may suddenly surface in the quiet of the night.
Your body wants to rest, but your thoughts seem to still be busy.
This feeling of “I want to sleep, but I just can’t relax” may be related to stress, emotions, sleep habits, and the way your autonomic nervous system regulates itself.
When the body and mind remain in a heightened state of alertness, it can become more difficult to naturally settle into restful sleep.
At times like this, you don’t need to force yourself to fall asleep immediately.
Instead, through gentle breathing and body awareness, you can send a simple message to your body and mind:
“It’s okay. I can slowly begin to rest now.”
-------------
👃 Why Can Slow Breathing Help Calm the Body and Mind?
The vagus nerve is an important component of the parasympathetic nervous system.
It plays a role in regulating heart rate, breathing, digestion, and various internal functions of the body.
When we slow down our breathing—
especially when we gently and comfortably lengthen the exhalation—
the interaction between breathing and heart rate can change, which may support parasympathetic activity and help reduce certain stress responses.
Diaphragmatic breathing may also help release unnecessary tension in the shoulders and neck, bringing our attention away from racing thoughts and gently back into the body.
This is not an instant “off switch” for the mind.
Rather, it is a practice that allows the nervous system to gradually return to a calmer rhythm.
-------------
🌙 5 Minutes Before Bed|Body Scan & Calming Practice
◎ Step 1|Settle into Your Abdomen & Diaphragm
Lie down in a comfortable position and gently place your hands on your upper abdomen or just below your ribs.
Feel the warmth of your hands and allow your shoulders and jaw to naturally relax.
Inhale for about 4 seconds:
Allow the air to enter naturally,
noticing your abdomen gently rise.
There is no need to intentionally push your belly outward.
Exhale for about 6 seconds:
Slowly breathe out and allow your abdomen to naturally fall.
You may gently make a soft “haaah…” sound
as you exhale and feel your body gradually release tension.
Repeat several times,
keeping your breathing soft and comfortable.
Do not hold your breath or force the rhythm.
If a 4-second inhale and 6-second exhale
doesn’t feel comfortable,
simply adjust the rhythm to one that feels natural for you.
◎ Step 2|Body Scan from Your Feet to the Top of Your Head
Continue breathing slowly and naturally as you gently bring your awareness to:
Soles of the feet → Calves → Pelvis → Abdomen → Chest →
Shoulders → Neck → Face → Crown of the head
As you move your attention through each area, gently ask yourself:
“Is this area tense or relaxed right now?”
There is nothing you need to change.
Simply notice what you feel.
With each exhalation, imagine your body becoming heavier and gently surrendering its weight to the bed.
Allow unnecessary tension to soften, little by little.
◎ Step 3|A Gentle Bedtime Affirmation
Quietly say to yourself:
“Today was enough.”
“I now allow myself to rest.”
“I don’t need to solve everything tonight.
I can continue tomorrow.”
Let your breathing return to its natural rhythm.
There is no need to count your breaths anymore.
If you begin to feel sleepy, simply allow yourself to peacefully drift into sleep.

✨ From Chakra Symbolism to Body Awareness
In mind-body-spirit practices, chakras can also be used as a symbolic map for exploring our attention and emotions.
For example:
Solar Plexus Chakra may symbolize personal power and a sense of inner safety.
Heart Chakra may symbolize emotions, love, and connection.
Third Eye Chakra may symbolize thoughts, awareness, and inner observation.
These associations are symbolic correspondences found in traditional mind-body-spirit systems, rather than medical or anatomical classifications of the nervous system.
Through this kind of awareness, we can learn to understand our bodies and emotions with greater gentleness and compassion.

💬 Which Part of Your Body Is the Hardest to Relax Before Bed?
A|My Mind Just Won’t Stop
Your forehead and eye area feel tense, and your thoughts keep running.
B|My Neck & Shoulders Are Always Tense
Your shoulders unconsciously rise, and the back of your neck feels difficult to relax.
C|My Abdomen Feels Tight & My Breathing Is Shallow
Your belly feels like it is constantly holding tension, making it difficult to breathe deeply and naturally.
💬 Leave a comment with A, B, or C
and share what your body feels like before bedtime.
✨ Tonight, take just five minutes to give yourself a little space to slow down, feel grounded, and gently return to calm.
