After eight grueling hours of relentless effort, Mr. Cheng was transferred to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU). Although remaining in critical condition, he gradually restored his health surrounded by the support of his family and the medical team.

從4.3歲→0.2歲，早一步發現，對黏多醣症病兒而言，可能就是不一樣的人生。

黏多醣症在寶寶出生時往往看不出異常，等到症狀出現，骨骼、器官甚至神經發展可能已受到不可逆的傷害。
馬偕兒童醫院團隊投入黏多醣症新生兒篩檢研究十年，累積近84萬名新生兒篩檢資料，讓31名病兒在症狀出現前就被發現，也將平均確診年齡從4.3歲大幅提前至0.2歲。
其中，小寶（化名）出生1個月篩檢發現異常、3個月確診，及早接受治療，如今已經6歲、健康狀況良好，明年就要上小學了。
十年研究成果已登上國際權威醫學期刊《Genetics in Medicine》。新生兒篩檢看似只是出生後的一項檢查，對罕病孩子而言，卻可能是搶在疾病造成傷害前的重要機會。

From 4.3 years to just 0.2 years — early detection can change a child’s future.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) often show no obvious signs at birth. By the time symptoms appear, irreversible damage may already have affected the bones, organs, or neurological development.

Over the past decade, the MacKay Children’s Hospital research team has studied newborn screening data from nearly 840,000 infants. The program enabled 31 children with MPS to be diagnosed before symptoms appeared and reduced the average age at diagnosis from 4.3 years to 0.2 years.

One of them was flagged by newborn screening at just one month old and diagnosed at three months, allowing treatment to begin early. Now six, the child is doing well and getting ready to start elementary school next year. ❤️

The 10-year research findings have been published in Genetics in Medicine, highlighting how newborn screening can open a critical window for early diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.

For nearly 25 years, the team from MacKay Memorial Hospital has been deeply rooted in Jianshi Township and the Smangus tribe in Hsinchu. Despite the raging typhoon, muddy mountain roads, and severe weather, the medical team keeps the mountain residents in their hearts. Carrying vehicles loaded with essential medical supplies and chronic disease medications, they braved the storm to offer free clinics and home visits. 🏠💊

"Knowing the mountain residents need us, we decided to set off anyway. Seeing everyone safe on the mountain with our own eyes is what truly sets our minds at ease."

對於親人的離開有許多不捨，不過對重度腦傷或多重異常的患者而言，漫長的治療可能帶來低落的生活品質，不僅患者承受痛苦，家屬也可能陷入長期的壓力與身心枯竭。

這次經歷後，每當面對艱難的醫療抉擇，我嘗試與家屬討論「功能存活」的概念。不只談存活，而是讓家屬理解未來的生活樣貌。

【The Best Decision: A Mother’s Choice】

Advances in medical technology have continuously increased the possibility of prolonging life. However, posing the binary question "Should we save them?" often leads people to overlook the long-term impact of disease and disability.

No matter how difficult it is to let go of a loved one, for patients with severe brain injury or multiple abnormalities, prolonged treatment may result in a poor quality of life. This subjects not only the patient to ongoing suffering, but also pushes family members into long-term stress and physical and emotional exhaustion.

Following this experience, whenever faced with difficult medical choices, I strive to discuss the concept of "functional survival" with families. Beyond mere survival, it is about helping them understand what the future quality of life will truly look like.

麥當勞叔叔之家慈善基金會捐贈「重症加護型新生兒保溫箱」

馬偕兒童醫院長期致力於照護急重難罕病童，同時肩負早產兒照護後線醫療責任。早產兒許多器官尚未發育成熟，心肺功能與體溫調節能力不穩定。保溫箱能提供穩定的溫度與濕度，是守護早產兒平安長大的重要設備。本次捐贈的重症加護型保溫箱，能精準控制溫濕度，提供重症新生兒穩定的醫療環境，結合呼吸與監測設備，降低感染與併發症風險，成為重症新生兒照護的一大利器。
馬偕兒童醫院院長陳治平表示，馬偕早在1962年即設立早產兒病房，1979年成立全臺第一個新生兒加護病房，在早產兒照顧上歷史悠久。照顧重症與早產病童，除了醫護團隊的用心，更需要先進良好的醫療設備。感謝麥當勞叔叔之家慈善基金會長久以來的支持、協助與捐贈，讓醫院能更快取得優質設備，為極低體重與重症病童提供更好的照顧。
麥當勞叔叔之家慈善基金會行政財務經理陳平表示，在少子化的現今，每一位寶寶都顯彌足珍貴。重症加護型保溫箱就像是他們『出生後的第一個家』，期許這批設備能成為醫護團隊最堅強的後盾。
馬偕兒童醫院與 麥當勞叔叔之家慈善基金會 長期合作，除了醫療設備的升級，基金會志工團隊同時也於兒童病房定期「親善服務車」，與醫療團對攜手為住院病童與家長帶來溫暖與喘息空間。未來馬偕也將持續與社會公益團體合作，共同打造更完善的兒童醫療環境，守護病童成長。
