For the first time in a long while, I feel cautiously optimistic about PhilHealth.
I recently watched an interview with Dr. Beverly Ho, its new Acting President and CEO. What stood out was her emphasis on transparency, efficiency, and making healthcare easier for Filipinos to access.
She also highlighted the need to strengthen outpatient care and prevention, instead of helping patients only when they are already hospitalized.
It should not be inpatient versus outpatient. We need both. But prevention has been neglected for far too long.
As a cardiologist, I see why this matters. Many premature deaths and complications from hypertension and diabetes can be prevented or delayed through early detection, consistent treatment, and regular follow-up.
PhilHealth can play a major role in making that care more accessible and affordable.
Of course, plans are easy to announce. Ex*****on, accountability, and the actual patient experience will be the real tests.
Still, this is the first time in years that I have felt hopeful about PhilHealth’s direction.
Cautiously optimistic. Kayo, what are your thoughts?
