「胸腔醫學之父」----法國醫師勒內•拉埃內克在1816年首先發明了聽診器的雛形。
在1816年的某一天，他為一名貴婦看病。由於該貴婦十分豐腴，用傳統的貼身聽診法不易診斷，也不宜直接用耳朵貼著其胸部來診斷。
這時，拉埃內克醫師突然想起他曾看過「一群孩子在玩耍時，一些小孩在圓木一端刮木頭，而另一些孩子的耳朵無意間貼近了圓木另一端，突然高興地歡呼『聽見了對面的聲音』。」
他頓時得到啟發，將紙捲成一個圓筒，一端放在婦人心臟部位，一端貼在自己的耳朵上。他果然聽見婦人心臟清晰的跳動聲。

而後，根據這個原理，他創造出了一種與單耳式木質聽診器相似的聽診器。
並於1819年將這個發明寫進了《間接聽診法》一書。
而經過層層改良，逐漸形成了現代的雙耳聽診器。
