To build a more robust global health safety net for overseas Taiwanese entrepreneurs, Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) has been collaborating with the ASIA TAIWANESE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE (ASTCC) since 2024 to establish an "Overseas Taiwanese Business Healthcare Mechanism."

On July 16, Dr. Yun-Ching Fu, Superintendent of TCVGH, representing the Telecare Industry Association Taiwan (TIAT), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ASTCC President Hsiu-Hsia Yu. Case Study: Early Cancer Detection & Treatment

During an overseas health lecture hosted by TCVGH in the Philippines, a Taiwanese entrepreneur named Ms. Lin (pseudonym) was reminded to monitor her health. Arranged by TCVGH’s International Medical Service Center, Ms. Lin returned to Taiwan for an advanced precision health screening, which unexpectedly revealed an early-stage cancer lesion.

Although Ms. Lin had already gone back to the Philippines, the International Medical Service Center quickly facilitated her seamless return to Taiwan through a "Green Channel" (expedited care path). The TCVGH medical team subsequently performed surgery followed by both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Today, Ms. Lin has fully recovered and since returned to her overseas career.

Strengthening International Collaboration to Shape the Future of Smart Healthcare

Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) welcomed faculty members and students from Lunghwa University of Science and Technology as well as Mahidol University (Thailand) on July 13, 2026 for an institutional visit. Through guided tours and interactive exchanges, the visitors gained valuable insights into both TCVGH's achievements in smart healthcare and its distinctive approach to medical education, further promoting international academic collaboration and talent development.

On behalf of the hospital, Deputy Superintendent Yuan-Hwa Chou delivered the introductory and welcoming remarks. At that time, Superintendent Chou emphasized that, as one of Taiwan's leading medical centers, TCVGH is committed to providing high-quality healthcare services while also advancing medical education, clinical research and innovation. In recent years, the hospital has actively promoted both smart healthcare and digital transformation through the integration of artificial intelligence, smart healthcare systems and interdisciplinary collaboration in order to continuously enhance healthcare quality and patient-centered care. He expressed the hope that this visit would foster deeper international collaboration through the exchange of knowledge and experience, thus contributing to the advancement of global healthcare.

In partnership with The Council of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Vietnam (CTCVN), TCVGH is committed to building a more comprehensive overseas healthcare network through both medical exchanges and resource integration.

During this exchange event, TCVGH showcased its achievements in smart healthcare, telemedicine and international medical services, demonstrating how digital technologies can overcome geographical barriers, thus enabling overseas Taiwanese communities to better access Taiwan’s high-quality healthcare services with greater convenience.

Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Exchange Event for International Trainees at Taichung Veterans General Hospital

On June 17, 2026, the International Medical Center of TCVGH warmly hosted a Dragon Boat Festival cultural exchange event for our international trainees. We were honored as we welcomed trainees from Malaysia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan to join this festive gathering.

Through sharing both the origins of the Dragon Boat Festival along with Taiwan’s traditional rice dumplings, participants had the opportunity to learn more about Taiwanese heritage while also promoting strong interaction with one another in a friendly and welcoming environment. During the event, participants enjoyed sharing one another’s cultures, tasting local festive treats and engaging in meaningful conversations. The event finished up with a group photo to capture this memorable time together.

We sincerely believe that these types of cultural exchanges will continue to enhance mutual understanding while also fostering a warm and inclusive international training environment within Taichung Veterans General Hospital.

Taichung Veterans General Hospital Expands Its International Medical Reach to Canada, Building a Global Healthcare Network Through Partnerships with Taiwanese Communities Abroad

•Deepening Taiwan–Canada Medical Cooperation and Expanding International Healthcare Services
To further strengthen international medical collaboration and enhance healthcare services for overseas Taiwanese communities, a delegation from Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH), led by Deputy Superintendent Prof. Yuan-Hwa Chou, visited both Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, over the period of May 14th to the 22nd, 2026. The visit included exchanges with both medical institutions and diplomatic missions, the signing of international cooperation agreements, and participation in community health seminars. Through these initiatives, TCVGH further expanded its international healthcare service network while also strengthening medical cooperation between Taiwan and Canada.

•Advancing Cancer Proton Therapy Through International Exchange and Collaboration
During the visit, the TCVGH delegation toured leading medical institutions in Toronto, including The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), to engage in in-depth discussions regarding the development and clinical applications of proton therapy for cancer treatment. Through both professional exchanges and knowledge sharing, the delegation gained valuable insights into the current global trends taking place in advanced medical care, which will no doubt serve as an important reference for future clinical innovation and international collaboration.

•Partnering with Overseas Diplomatic Missions to Strengthen International Healthcare Support Networks
The delegation also visited the Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices (TECO) in both Toronto and Vancouver. During meetings with the Directors-General of both offices, discussions focused on international medical collaboration, the healthcare needs of Taiwanese communities abroad, and the integration of future healthcare resources. Through closer coordination between Taiwan’s overseas missions and medical institutions, this initiative aims to further strengthen international healthcare support networks for overseas Taiwanese communities.

•Signing MoUs to Strengthen International Healthcare Partnerships
To further expand healthcare service resources for Taiwanese communities abroad, TCVGH signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Taiwan Merchants Association of Toronto (TMAT) and the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women (GFCBW) Vancouver Chapter, establishing formal cooperation frameworks. Going forward, the parties will collaborate to promote healthcare services and health promotion initiatives for overseas Taiwanese communities, thus providing more accessible and comprehensive international healthcare services.

•Inauguration of the TCVGH International Medical Telehealth Service Center: Advancing Cross-Border Healthcare Services
Notably, the itinerary included the inauguration ceremony of the “TCVGH International Medical Telehealth Service Center” in Toronto, marking a significant milestone in TCVGH’s overseas telemedicine initiatives. Leveraging telemedicine platforms and cross-border healthcare mechanisms, the center will provide more timely and convenient medical consultations and health management services for Taiwanese communities abroad.

In addition to strategic cooperation initiatives, the TCVGH medical team hosted three health seminars for Taiwanese communities abroad—one in Toronto and two in Vancouver. The seminars addressed a range of highly relevant topics, including:

Each session attracted approximately 150 participants, with total attendance exceeding 450. Time truly flies as we once again celebrate the completion of training for our international medical trainees. Dr. Ariunselenge Batchuluun and Dr. Baterdene Tserendorj from Mongolia (Bayangol District General Hospital), and Dr. Akhil Vignesh Dhanu Jayan Sri Priya from India (Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram), have successfully completed their clinical training at Taichung Veterans General Hospital.

Strengthening Inter-Hospital Collaboration to Create a New Model of Seamless Care for International Patients

Taichung Veterans General Hospital and Yuan Rung Hospital officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 4, 2026, establishing a long-term partnership to jointly strengthen the integration of medical resources and also enhance the overall quality of healthcare services.

This collaboration focuses on “integrated care for international patients.” Through inter-hospital cooperation, the partnership will connect the entire care journey—from telemedicine consultations, arrangements for medical visits to Taiwan, referral coordination, and inpatient treatment, to post-discharge follow-up—creating a smoother and uninterrupted care experience. Key areas of collaboration include: Establishing standardized inter-hospital cooperation procedures as well as a coordination platform. Strengthening information sharing and service integration. Optimizing both referral and consultation mechanisms in order to reduce waiting times. Promoting professional exchanges to continuously improve medical quality.

Through institutionalized cooperation and resource integration, this partnership will not only strengthen the connection within the regional healthcare system but also further enhance Taiwan’s overall competitiveness within the international medical services community.

A Health Seminar Helps Realizing a Wish | A Trans-Pacific Journey Home

A physician, has retired in USA in his 70s, and is long-term hospitalized after a cerebral hemorrhage with multiple complications. When his condition has stabilized, he expressed a simple yet strong wish, that is, to return to his home-land, Taiwan, to reunite with his family there.
Through connections made during overseas health seminars held by the International Medical Center of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, what once had seemed like an unattainable dream to him soon became a possible reality.

The home-coming process consisted of a relay of professional care, safeguarding every mile of his trans-Pacific journey:
The plan involved, among others, a medical air ambulance and international medical transfer.
Two medical teams, working in shifts, provided a continuous patient care, monitoring his health condition throughout the entire journey.

Upon landing Taiwan, seamless coordination ensured direct transfer on a local ambulance to the hospital.
So once the plane has landed Taiwan, the process represented not only the completion of a mission, but also realizing his long-awaited journey home.

Integrated Cross-Team Continuity of Care:
After returning to Taiwan, the patient was promptly admitted to the geriatric ward at Taichung Veterans General Hospital, where he was jointly cared for by a multidisciplinary medical team, including Director Shih-Yi Lin of the Geriatrics Center, Director Jin-An Huang of the Neurology Center, Director Yuan-Yang Cheng of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Director Chia-I Tsai of the Department of Traditional Medicine.

The medical team tailored treatment and rehabilitation plans based on the patient’s condition, providing integrated multidisciplinary care ranging from neurological care and functional recovery to overall physical conditions. Meanwhile, the nursing team, with attentiveness and patience, accompanied the patient through every stage of recovery. In what may seem like ordinary daily moments, each represents an important step closer toward full recovery.

On the day of discharge, the medical team, along with Division Director Wan-Yun Hsu of the International Medical Service Center and Head Nurse Ya-Hui Yeh, visited the ward in person to offer their blessings and encouragement, and carefully explained the rehabilitation plan that would follow. At that moment, what came together was not only the continuation of medical expertise, but also a sincere and profound expression of humanistic care, leaving a warm and touching mark on this journey that spanned thousands of miles.

At certain stages of life, the meaning of medical care is no longer solely about active treatment, but about enabling patients to go through important moments of their lives on a familiar ground, accompanied by their loved ones.

A High School Delegation from the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic Visited Taichung Veterans General Hospital to Engage in Exchanges on Digital Healthcare Development.

On March 31, 2026, a high school delegation from the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic, led by ICT Project Manager Václav Jáchim, visited Taichung Veterans General Hospital (TCVGH) to learn about its achievements in digital healthcare development. The delegation was personally received by Superintendent Yun-Ching Fu, who also arranged an exchange forum to introduce the hospital’s accomplishments and future plans in smart healthcare and clinical applications.

As part of the program, Director Huang Sheng-Yang of the Information Department at Taichung Veterans General Hospital was invited to introduce the hospital’s medical information systems, sharing experiences in system development, artificial intelligence applications, and cross-departmental integration. The students actively participated in discussions throughout the visit, demonstrating a strong enthusiasm for learning.

The delegation then visited the fully automated smart laboratory to gain insights into laboratory workflow automation and the applications of precision medicine. They also toured the telemedicine center, observing the operational models of remote care and cross-regional healthcare services.

During the visit and exchange, the students actively participated, engaging in lively discussions and asking numerous questions, creating a dynamic and enthusiastic atmosphere. Both sides also held in-depth discussions on practical applications of smart healthcare and potential collaboration in education and training. This visit not only deepened mutual understanding of digital healthcare development, but also laid a solid foundation for future international cooperation in education and healthcare.

Time continues to fly by as Taichung Veterans General Hospital once again arrives at the moment where we celebrate the completion of training for our four most recent international medical trainees. Dr. Lee Yeow Siong from Malaysia (Ministry of Health), Dr. Emmanuel Benedict Noel from the Philippines (St. Luke's Medical Center), Dr. Pawut Gumrai from Thailand (Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital), and Dr. Setyo Budi Premiaji Widodo from Indonesia (Margono Soekarjo General Hospital) have each successfully completed their clinical training at Taichung Veterans General Hospital.
During their time with us,
• Dr. Lee Yeow Siong trained across the Departments of Urology, Women’s Health, and Family Medicine.
• Dr. Emmanuel Benedict Noel completed his training in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT).
• Dr. Pawut Gumrai furthered his expertise in the Department of Cardiology.
• Dr. Setyo Budi Premiaji Widodo specialized in Orthopedic Spine Surgery.

Throughout their training, all four doctors demonstrated remarkable dedication, professionalism and passion towards the caring of their patients. Each member of the team of trainees fully immersed themselves in clinical practice, actively exchanging knowledge and gaining valuable experience which they will now bring back to their home countries.
