HIMD works with marginalized groups in the areas of education, health, socio-economic empowerment and gender mainstreaming through participatory approaches. HIMD strives for gender equality through the support of women empowerment groups, as well as combatting FGM and providing women with legal advice and making them aware of their rights. Furthermore, HIMD focuses on HIV and AIDS awareness using
medical and socio-cultural approaches aiming at reducing stigma and the promotion of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT). Lastly, HIMD focuses on promoting environmental conservation as well as promoting micro-enterprises which are environmental friendly. The priority target groups of HIMD are: single parents, specifically single mothers; women; children, specifically orphans; people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA); and youth. Activities that HIMD is currently engaged in include:
- Sensitization and education on HIV and AIDS prevention, transmission and stigma.
- Sensitization against FGM and other HTPs.
- Support and empowerment through technical advice of NGOs, CBOs and small women economic groups.
- Counseling for women in distress, specifically primary and secondary school drop-outs due to unexpected pregnancies. HIMD focuses mostly on teen-age single mothers who have been abandoned and widows whose inheritance rights have been violated.
- Training on leadership skills as a strategy to empower groups, both women and youth.
- Training on micro-enterprise for women and youth seeking to raise their income, as HIMD’ contribution towards national poverty eradication.
- Education of youth on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), the danger of early pregnancies, and the risks of using addictive substances.
