African Journal of Emergency Medicine Promoting emergency care across Africa It is an international, peer-reviewed journal aimed in particular at supporting emergency care across Africa.

The African Journal of Emergency Medicine (AfJEM) is the official journal of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine. AfJEM publishes original research, reviews, brief reports of scientific investigations, case reports as well as commentary and correspondence related to topics of scientific, ethical, social and economic importance to emergency care in Africa. Articles will be of direct importance to African emergency care, but may have originated from elsewhere in the world.

Fake citations are no longer rare errors, they are becoming a growing threat to scientific integrity.

A recent large-scale audit of 2.5 million biomedical papers found that fabricated references in peer-reviewed literature increased more than 12-fold between 2023 and 2026. Most fake citations appeared convincing: correctly formatted, linked to real researchers, and highly topic-specific.

As AI-assisted writing becomes more common, strengthening reference verification and research integrity safeguards is more important than ever.
