Learning together, strengthening health systems. 🤝

📸 Recently, Amref Health Africa Tanzania welcomed Medical Officer trainees from the U.S. Military Tropical Medicine (MTM) Programme who visited Temeke Regional Referral Hospital (RRH), gaining firsthand insights into Tanzania’s public health system and how health services are delivered at the hospital level.

The engagement brought learning beyond the classroom creating space for knowledge exchange, practical experience and a deeper understanding of public health in Tanzania. From emergency medicine and maternity care to laboratory services, TB and HIV care, radiology and the use of health data, the trainees explored how different parts of the health system work together to deliver quality care.

The rotation was facilitated through collaboration between the Ministry of Health, Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), U.S. CDC Tanzania, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) and Amref Tanzania demonstrating the power of partnerships in strengthening health systems and building a stronger global health workforce.

📸 Today in Mwanza Region, Amref Health Africa Tanzania convened an introductory meeting for the SUPREME Project, bringing together the Regional Health Management Team (RHMT), Council Health Management Teams (CHMTs), implementing partners, and other key stakeholders to mark the official launch of the project.

👏The meeting introduced participants to the project's objectives, implementation approach, expected outcomes, and timeline. Representatives from the Prime Minister's Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG) and consortium partner, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), also participated, reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening government ownership and collaboration in improving maternal health.

🗣️ "Reproductive health, especially maternal and newborn mortality, remains a significant challenge in our region, and we believe this project will play a vital role in addressing these issues and improving health outcomes for our communities,"said Dr. Kheri Kagya, Regional Medical Officer (RMO), Mwanza.

🗣️ "The SUPREME Project is in Mwanza with a clear purpose: to work collaboratively in addressing pre-eclampsia and maternal anaemia, ultimately contributing to the reduction of maternal mortality in Tanzania," said Dr. Serafina Mkuwa, Program Lead for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) at Amref Tanzania.

Funded by Unitaid, the SUPREME Project will be implemented in Misungwi District, Mwanza Region, and Kibiti District, Pwani Region. Through evidence-based interventions and strong partnerships, the project aims to strengthen maternal healthcare services and improve health outcomes for women and their newborns.

🤝 The meeting, attended by Pwani Regional Medical Officer Dr. Kusinje Urio and Kibiti District Executive Director Hanan Bafagih, introduced participants to the project's objectives, implementation approach, expected outcomes, and implementation timeline.

🤝 Investing in the Future of Community Health in Tanzania

A major milestone in strengthening community health systems!

Amref Health Africa, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and consortium partners Living Goods, Healthy Entrepreneurs, and Africa Frontline First/Financing Alliance for Health (FHA), officially introduced the Community Health Workforce (CHW) Development Programme to the Ministry of Health's Health Promotion Services (HPS) Technical Team in Dodoma.

The programme aims to strengthen Tanzania's community health system by empowering Community Health Workers (CHWs) with the skills, support, and opportunities needed to deliver quality primary healthcare while promoting dignified and sustainable employment.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr.Rahma Ahmed Hingora, Assistant Director of Health Promotion Services at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of collaboration:

"We need collective efforts to strengthen community health services. Community Health Workers are our frontline soldiers, and by investing in them, we invest in healthier communities."

Michael Machaku, Project Manager of the Mastercard Foundation CHW Programme at Amref Health Africa Tanzania, added:

"This programme is about investing in Tanzania's Community Health Workforce by strengthening skills, partnerships, and sustainable systems to ensure quality primary healthcare reaches every community."

Together with the Government of Tanzania and our partners, we are building a stronger health workforce and healthier communities across the country. 🇹🇿
