Essential oil yield depends on 2 factors, the first of them is the capacity of the column, the second, % oil in the plants. Essential oil still 10 l equipped with 9 liters (approx. 2,37 US gal) column. Generally, it’s enough for filling with 1,2 kg (2.65 lb) of dried flowers plants. As result, you can receive approx. 36-56 ml ml (1,2-1,8 fl oz) during the first 25 minutes. It might take a little bit more time in the case of collecting hydrosols.

Steam distillation is carried out by passing steam through the plant material. The combination of heated steam and gentle pressure causes releasing the essential oil from herbs.

In the case of using wide columns you have to ensure enough pressure, the column can't be too high.

Otherwise, you will receive the oil from the lower part of the column where is the largest pressure (max. on the "Tall & narrow column" image*), but, lose the oil from the rest plants at the top of the column.

Tall columns can be good for distillation alcohol by using a copper still, however, as I mentioned before, it's not an option for producing essential oil.
