Everyone desires a clean bright smile but unfortunately some people can’t achieve that even with daily brushing . Sometimes it’s no fault of theirs , however they carry the burden of having stains on their teeth .
Tooth discoloration is an unpleasant coloration of the tooth which could be caused by multiple local or systemic conditions . Generally, it can be caused by extrinsic ( external ) factors or intrinsic ( internal ) factors .
Examples of extrinsic causes of tooth stains include; dental plaque & calculus, Foods & beverages ,To***co, certain Bacteria, some mouth rinses and even oral medications .
Intrinsic stains can be caused by Trauma or injuries to the teeth, dental restorations, Infections, Dental caries, nutritional deficiency, genetic defects, hereditary diseases, complications of pregnancy, medication etc
Irrespective of the cause of the tooth discoloration, a poor oral hygiene always makes it worse .
As a general rule, the teeth gets yellower as individuals age . This is due to the wearing off of the outer enamel surface to reveal the slightly yellower inner dentine . So depending on your age , we expect your teeth to gets yellower
However, certain habits & foods can cause the enamel to erode faster e.g use of hard toothbrushes, frequent consumption of highly acidic substances , frequent use of charcoal / eggshell as a cleansing agent for the teeth etc
The effects of tooth discoloration cannot be overemphasized, from low self esteem to shyness etc. An increasing number of individuals seek dental care to combat one form of stain or the other to achieve a brighter smile
