Your brain is lying to you during recovery. 🧠👇

When you’re injured, your brain naturally goes into threat mode. It scans for pain, tracks what you can’t do, and ignores your progress. Left on autopilot, it will convince you that you are stuck. You have to manually override it. Every single time you accomplish a micro-win you need to say it out loud or in your mind. I usually say it out loud and give my knee a little kiss 😁. “Good job Jana.”

This isn’t toxic positivity. It is neuroscience. When you intentionally acknowledge a small victory, your brain releases a hit of dopamine. Your reward system doesn’t care about the scale of the win, it only cares that a win happened. That dopamine acts like a highlighter, tagging that moment and rewiring your neural pathways to remember: “I am healing. I am capable.”Stop waiting for the final medical clearance to feel proud of yourself. Build the mindset now.

During recovery it’s important to focus on what’s working rather than what’s going wrong.
If your focus is constantly on what’s missing, what’s not working, or what might go wrong, your perception of the entire situation becomes heavier. Effort feels harder, progress feels slower…

If your attention shifts even just a bit toward what is working, what is possible, or what is within your control, the experience changes. The situation itself hasn’t changed. But your relationship to it has, and that relationship is what determines how you respond.

During recovery, it’s important to stay connected to who you were before. If you’re a runner, go to your run club and say hi. If you play football, go watch training. Just show up.

Recovery is isolating. There are days you don’t want to do anything. I know how painful it is to watch your friends do the things you love.

But your nervous system remembers. The excitement of stepping onto the pitch, the smell of the stables, the feeling of being you.

That’s why I went to see the horses. I can’t ride right now. But just being there felt like coming home. 🐴

The first stage of recovery? Numbing. We all do it — scrolling, watching TV, anything to not feel it. And that’s okay at first.
But stay there too long and you’ll slowly disconnect. From your body. From yourself.

Injury doesn’t just change your body. It changes your whole your plans, your identity, your social life, gone overnight. 🩼
And the FOMO? Nobody talks about how brutal that is.
What helped me is to have something to look forward once I’ll get better.
Recovery is a whole mental game. What do you look forward once you are healed? Let me know in comments.
