Curtis Wayne Newsome, Jr.

Curt Newsome departed this life on May 31, 2026 in Abingdon, Virginia, after a lengthy illness. He was born October 29, 1958, in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Curtis Wayne and Gayle Newsome. Curt was in the first graduating class of Phoebus High School and earned his undergraduate degree from Emory & Henry College in 1982. He was a 4-year starter on defense in football and pitched 3 seasons of baseball for the Wasps.

After graduating from Emory & Henry, Curt began his football coaching odyssey at Ervinton High School in Dickenson County. From there, he moved back home to the eastern part of the state, with high school coaching stops at Phoebus, Kecoughtan, and Heritage High School. His collegiate coaching career began as an assistant at James Madison University for two stints, before and after serving as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. In 2014, he returned to his alma mater, where he directed the Wasps for ten seasons. In the fall of 2024, Curt was selected to the Emory & Henry University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hard-nosed and fiercely competitive, his true gift was in understanding young people and earning their trust. Building relationships proved to be the key to their successes, both on the field and, more importantly, in life. From the second-string boy who lived up in a holler in Clinchco to the various future NFL players he recruited and coached, Curt knew what made them tick. And he loved them.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 43 years, Melinda; children, Curt III (Beth) of Williamsburg and Elizabeth Heiskell (Tyler) of Richmond; and grandchildren, Wyatt and Eloise. He is also survived by his brothers, Bryan of Manakin-Sabot and Vaughn (Joy) of Smithfield; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to especially thank the nurses and staff of the Cancer Center at Johnston Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care and kindness.

The funeral service for Coach Curt Newsome will be at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Highlands Fellowship Church in Abingdon. Visitation will follow the service. He will be interred in Hampton, Virginia. A celebration of life will be held in Hampton at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kirk Nairn Memorial Scholarship at P.O. Box 1242, Abingdon, VA 24211, or online at 4knscholarship.com, or to Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry, 22417 Watauga Rd., Abingdon, VA 24211.

Haley Thomas "Tony" Webb

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.” (1 Peter 4:10) This verse is a faithful reflection of how Haley Thomas Webb Jr., known to most as Tony, lived his life. Born in Abingdon, Virginia, on April 6, 1962, to Haley Thomas Webb Sr. and Gardenia Watkins Webb, he was welcomed with love by four older siblings and soon became a big brother to three more.

Tony grew up in the foothills of Meadowview, Virginia, as a child he spent many hours farming to***co with his dad and brothers, attending school and church with his family , and countless hours playing sports and many pranks with cousins and neighborhood friends. In high school at Patrick Henry, he excelled in athletics, earning letters in track, basketball, and football. He continued his education at Ferrum College, where he ran track and formed lifelong friendships. After earning his associate degree, he attended Emory & Henry College, played basketball, and even worked as a campus radio DJ under the stage name Adrian Aaron. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communications. He was the first person in his family to obtain a college degree.

While in college, Tony met his wife, Miriam. Together they raised four children: Tre, Shelsi, Christian, and Carmen. Tony devoted many hours to coaching his children in various sports, especially basketball, where his dedication to excellence was paramount. You could find him any given day at the gym training his kids. He volunteered countless hours coaching at the YMCA, BTCS Recreation Leagues, and in travel basketball. To many young men in the community, he was not only a coach but a mentor and a father figure. Tony had a heart for advocating for “the little man,” offering tough love paired with unwavering encouragement to be one’s best and to never give up.

Professionally, Tony wrote for the Washington County News while in college and for a few years after graduation. Following, he began a career in advertising and sales which spanned over 35 years. He began by selling copiers, transitioned to billboards, and eventually found his home at L.M. Berry selling Yellow Pages advertising. As the company evolved, ultimately becoming Thryv and specializing in digital marketing, Tony adapted and remained devoted to success. The role required travelling near and far, but Tony always found time to travel back home for basketball games when the boys reached high school. He earned numerous awards and formed many lasting friendships before retiring on May 1, 2026.

In his free time, Tony had many passions. He loved sports, music, and art. He spent years cheering on his favorite athletes and enjoyed collecting sports cards. He was also a talented sketch artist, filling sketchpads with drawings that reflected his creativity and eye for detail. From his many business trips, he collected artwork from South Carolina’s Lowcountry, building a meaningful and personal collection over the years.

Tony’s love for music stayed with him throughout his life. His days as a college DJ carried forward, inspiring him to make mixtapes, write songs, and discover new artists. His family always knew he was having an exceptionally good day when he was singing.

In his younger years, Tony was also passionate about weightlifting. He embraced the discipline and strength it demanded, and it became an important part of who he was during that season of his life. Although this passion faded he still greatly cared about his appearance. Spending time curating fantastic outfits and shoes. He also loved to gift new pieces to family and friends. Tony set the standard for exceptional taste and style.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Haley Thomas Webb Sr.; his brothers George Timothy Watkins and James Mark Webb; his sister Barbara Elaine Webb; and his father‑in‑law Felipe Sierra Rentas. He is survived by his wife, Miriam Rentas Webb; his children Tre Jordan Webb (Savannah), Shelsi-Elizabeth Webb Young (John), Christian Tomas Webb, and Carmen Haley Webb; as well as his five grandchildren Silas Dominic Webb, Charlotte Rose Webb, Florence Marigold Webb, George Thomas Young, and Hale Simon Young. He is also survived by his brothers Fred Allen Watkins (Ava), Richard Lynn Watkins, and Stanley Webb (Melanie), his loving sister Delores Watkins Fullen, mother-in-law Luz Ayala Rentas, brothers-in-law Wilfredo Rentas (Lupita) and Mario Rentas (Kathy), sister-in-law Maria del Carmen Rentas Townsend and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.

Tony was the ultimate provider, protector, and friend. He will be remembered for his welcoming smile, warm hugs, perseverance, and steadfast spirit. While our hearts are heavy, we are grateful he is no longer in pain and is at peace in God’s embrace. “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:23)

Please join us in celebrating Tony’s life. We will welcome family and friends on Monday, June 8, 2026, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Bristol, Virginia. The viewing will begin at 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral at 1:00 PM, with interment and a reception afterward.

The family of Haley Thomas "Tony" Webb is being cared for by Farris Funeral Service & Crematory, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210.

Glenneth L. Jones

Glenneth Lisle Jones, age 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, compassion, and service. A devoted mother and lifelong educator, Glenneth touched countless lives through her teaching and her unwavering commitment to others.

Born to Howard and Mary Taylor, Glenneth was raised in Bluff Hollow, where she developed a deep love of learning and a clear sense of purpose. From an early age, she knew she wanted to become a teacher—a calling she faithfully pursued throughout her life.

After graduating from Radford University at 19, Glenneth began her teaching career in the American Southwest, working on Native American reservations in New Mexico and Arizona. There, she served multiple tribes, bringing education, encouragement, and care to her students in communities that left a lasting impression on her heart.

Her passion for teaching led her to classrooms across North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia, where she continued to inspire and guide her students. She eventually returned to Virginia, concluding her career in Washington County at Rhea Valley Elementary School. Throughout every chapter of her career, Glennie remained deeply committed to her students and the value of education.

Glenneth was also widely known for her remarkable green thumb. She filled both her home and outdoor spaces with thriving plants and flowers, and she had a special gift for bringing even the most struggling plants back to life. She could spend hours searching for just the right plant—not looking for anything specific, but simply knowing when she had found the one. She took great joy in nurturing them and in sharing that passion with friends and family, often passing along plants, cuttings, and her knowledge to those she loved.

Alongside her love of teaching and plants, Glenneth found great joy in photography. She delighted in capturing the small but meaningful moments of her travels with family. She was equally fascinated by unusual plants and blossoms she encountered, often photographing them from every angle – and we have the slides to prove it. Glennie loved to share these captured moments with the same enthusiasm she brought to everything she loved.

Glenneth was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Jack, Steve, and Jerry. She is survived by her sisters, Ruth Ann and Jean; her three sons, Quintin (and Faith), Brian, and Warren (and Jael); and her beloved grandchildren, David (and Jordan), Marshall, Brylee, and Ian, whom brought her great joy.

Glenneth will be remembered not only for her kindness, her strength, and her lifelong devotion to teaching and family, but also for the life and beauty she cultivated—through her classrooms, her photographs, and the plants she so lovingly tended. Her legacy lives on in the many students she inspired, the family she cherished, and the love of growing things that she so generously shared with others.

Visitation with the family will be held 1-2 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2026, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Zion Methodist Church Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bristol, VA Humane Society, 16222 Lee Highway, Bristol, VA 24202, in Glenneth’s name. Those wishing to express sympathy online may do so by visiting www.farrisfuneralservice.com and signing the online guest register.
