Today we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders who ran toward danger that day and in the weeks that followed.
Among those heroes were hundreds of search and rescue dogs and their handlers, who worked long, grueling shifts through the rubble at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville. They searched for survivors, helped bring the lost home to their families, and offered quiet comfort to exhausted rescue workers when nothing else could. Alongside them were therapy dogs, police K9s, and the veterinary teams who cared for those working animals around the clock.
As a veterinary hospital, we hold a special place in our hearts for the animals who serve without ever being asked. They are a reminder of the loyalty, courage, and devotion that got so many people through the darkest of days.
We will never forget.
